How to get to Wood Buffalo National Park

Fort McMurray, Alberta is approximately 450 kilometers south via Highway 63 and Highway 5, requiring about five to six hours of driving. Fort Smith, the park's administrative hub, is accessible from Hay River in the Northwest Territories via the Mackenzie Highway and Highway 5. Highway 5 is paved. Side roads within the park, including Pine Lake Road, are hard-packed gravel suitable for RVs. All-weather access is maintained year-round, though winter driving requires caution. The nearest commercial airports are Fort Smith (with daily service to Yellowknife) and Fort McMurray (with connections from Calgary and Edmonton).
