Late June through early September is the prime window, when day-use facilities and the lighthouse museum are staffed, water temperatures in the Northumberland Strait are among the warmest north of the Carolinas, and ferry service runs at full frequency. July and August bring the busiest ferry traffic and warmest swimming conditions. Shoulder months of June and September offer quieter beaches, cooler nights ideal for RV sleeping, and strong fall colour inland. The park grounds are generally inaccessible or unmaintained from late October through April.

The Wood Islands Lighthouse is a restored working lightstation with interpretive exhibits on local maritime history, rum-running, and the phantom ship of the Northumberland Strait. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of the strait and the arriving ferry.
The park's shoreline features PEI's signature red sand and pebble beaches along the Northumberland Strait. Low tide exposes tide pools and driftwood ideal for casual walking and photography.
The waters off Wood Islands are among the warmest ocean swimming waters in Atlantic Canada during midsummer. Gentle surf and a gradual slope make it family-friendly, though no lifeguards are on duty.
The park sits directly beside the Northumberland Ferries terminal where the MV Confederation and MV Saaremaa 1 dock throughout the day. Open lawns near the lighthouse offer excellent vantage points for watching crossings to and from Caribou, Nova Scotia.
The park includes shaded picnic areas with tables and open lawns suitable for lunch breaks during a ferry layover. RV travellers often use it as a midday stop before continuing along the Points East Coastal Drive.
Wood Islands is the southern gateway to PEI's Points East Coastal Drive, a signed scenic route leading to fishing villages, lighthouses, and red cliffs across Kings County. RVers can day-trip to nearby Murray Harbour, Panmure Island Provincial Park, and Souris.
The waters around Wood Islands regularly host grey and harbour seals, cormorants, and migratory seabirds. Bring binoculars to scan the rocks and breakwater near the lighthouse at low tide.
First time renting a trailer and had a great first experience. The owners provided so much more than what is listed in their listing. From small kitchen appliances, cleaning supplies, dish ware, down to dvds for the dvd player. I could not have rented from better hosts. You will not be disappointed.

Cassie and Richard were amazing to deal with and the communication/drop off/pick up were all great. Camper was very well equipped, extremely clean and had very comfortable beds.

Cassie was a phenomenal host! The RV was just what we needed for our trip and our family had a delightful time. It was spotless and had so many helpful touches like pans, dishes, etc.

Wood Islands Provincial Park, PE, Canada
Wood Islands sits at the eastern end of Route 1 (the Trans-Canada Highway on PEI), about 60 kilometres or an hour's drive southeast of Charlottetown. RV travellers arriving from Nova Scotia can load onto the Northumberland Ferry at Caribou for a 75-minute crossing that lands directly at the park, while those coming from the mainland via the Confederation Bridge face roughly a 2-hour drive across the island. Roads are flat with no tunnels, mountain passes, or major grade restrictions, though the Confederation Bridge and Northumberland Ferry both have vehicle length and weight considerations that larger motorhomes and trailers should confirm with the operators in advance. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Charlottetown (YYG).
