The most comfortable window for visiting is mid-October through April, when daytime highs are mild and dry desert air makes outdoor walking between buildings pleasant. Winter is also peak snowbird season in Yuma, so nearby RV parks fill quickly and reservations should be made well ahead. Shoulder months of October and April balance smaller crowds with reasonable weather. Summer visits are possible but triple-digit heat is routine, and the park adjusts hours seasonally, closing Mondays from June 1 through September 30.

Walk through the core complex of restored adobe and frame structures that served as the Army supply hub. The US Army Quartermaster Depot is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is now the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park displaying five of Arizona's oldest and best-preserved buildings dating from the beginning of the Depot. nps.gov/articles/yuma.htm
Step inside the Corral House to learn how engineers tamed the lower Colorado River. An exhibit in the Corral House of the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park provides information about the construction of the Laguna Dam and Yuma Project.
View the engineering marvel that carries irrigation water beneath the Colorado River. The Colorado River Siphon is a concrete tube, 14 feet in diameter and dug 50 feet under the sandstone riverbed. Water in the Yuma Main Canal enters through an inlet on the California side, swirls 76 feet down through a vertical shaft, enters the tube, then bubbles up on the Arizona side. nps.gov/articles/arizona-laguna-dam-district.htm
Combine a visit with the adjacent prison site for a full Yuma Crossing history day. The park is open year round so visitors can experience the prison, which gained considerable fame after it was a feature in the 1957 film and more recent remake of 3:10 to Yuma. nps.gov/articles/yuma.htm
Stroll to the riverfront plaza marking the historic Yuma Crossing. Pivot Point Interpretive Park is located where Madison Avenue meets the river. It is a city park and open from 6am to 11pm daily.
Explore restored riparian habitat along the Colorado River on multi-use paths. The East and West Wetlands, located near the Colorado River, offer outdoor recreation activities close to downtown.
Connect with the wider Spanish colonial route that passed through Yuma Crossing. The first Europeans to visit Yuma Crossing arrived in 1540, when Hernando de Alarcon led a small band of sailors up the Colorado River in support of Coronado's expedition into the Southwest. nps.gov/places/yuma-crossing-national-heritage-area.htm

Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park, AZ, United States
The park sits just off Interstate 8 in downtown Yuma, about a 3-hour drive (175 miles) east of San Diego, California, and roughly 3 hours (185 miles) west of Phoenix, Arizona. Yuma Crossing is located just off Interstate 8, halfway between San Diego and Phoenix. RV drivers should note that I-8 crosses the In-Ko-Pah Mountains and Tecate Divide west of Yuma with long grades and strong crosswinds, so plan fuel stops and check brakes before descending. Yuma International Airport (YUM) is the closest fly-and-rent option, with larger hubs in Phoenix and San Diego.
