November through March is the prime window, when daytime highs are comfortable for walking the open-air cell yard and nighttime lows stay mild for RV boondocking in the Yuma area. The park keeps daily 9am to 5pm hours from October 1 through May 31, aligning with peak snowbird season in the Sonoran Desert. Shoulder months of April and October are still pleasant but trend hot by midday. Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, AZ, United States
The park sits just off Interstate 8 at Giss Parkway and Prison Hill Road, roughly halfway between San Diego, California and Phoenix, Arizona, each about a 3 hour drive. From Phoenix, take I-8 west about 185 miles; from San Diego, take I-8 east about 170 miles. I-8 is a flat, modern interstate with no tunnels or major mountain passes that restrict RVs, though grades over the In-Ko-Pah Mountains west of Yuma can be long, so drivers should watch engine temperatures and use lower gears on descents. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Yuma International Airport (YUM), just a few miles from the park.
