Campgrounds near Sussex, Wisconsin
Sussex sits in Waukesha County, roughly 20 miles northwest of downtown Milwaukee, and puts RV travelers within easy reach of southeastern Wisconsin's kettle-and-moraine landscape. The Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest covers more than 22,000 acres of forested glacial hills, kettle lakes, and prairies, interlaced with more than 100 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails. The Northern Unit lies about an hour north, and the smaller Pike Lake and Lapham Peak units sit closer still, giving Sussex-based travelers several state-forest camping options within a short drive.
Private campgrounds fill in the gaps around those public lands. Country View Campground, Lake Lenwood Beach and Campground, Timber Trail Campground, and Lazy Days Campground offer full-hookup sites in rural settings, while Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Caledonia targets families with a full slate of on-site activities.
Most private parks in the area operate seasonally, roughly May through October, while several state-forest campgrounds now accept reservations year-round. Booking well ahead is the norm for summer weekends.
Things to do near Sussex
Hiking and biking dominate the outdoor menu. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through all three Kettle Moraine units, and the John Muir, Emma Carlin, and Scuppernong trail systems in the Southern Unit draw mountain bikers and hikers from across the region. Long Lake and Mauthe Lake in the Northern Unit offer swim beaches, while Ottawa Lake, Whitewater Lake, and Pinewoods anchor the Southern Unit for paddling and fishing.
Families traveling with kids often plan a day at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Caledonia, which runs pools, water play areas, mini golf, bouncy pillows, and regular character appearances during the season. Downtown Milwaukee, Old World Wisconsin in Eagle, and the shops of Cedarburg are all within a 45-minute drive for rainy-day backup plans.

The practical camping season around Sussex runs from early May through mid-October. Most private parks in the area follow a spring-to-fall calendar, opening in late April or early May and closing in early to mid-October. Country View Campground, Lake Lenwood Beach and Campground, Timber Trail Campground, and Lazy Days Campground all operate on this general window, with exact opening and closing dates varying year to year.
Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest window. State-forest sites in the Kettle Moraine units book up early for Friday and Saturday nights, and lakefront private sites disappear first. Shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October see cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier availability, though swim beaches close after Labor Day at many parks.
Winter access is limited but not absent. Not all campsites or campground roads are plowed during winter, so travelers should confirm conditions before arrival. Mauthe Lake in the Northern Unit is one of several Kettle Moraine campgrounds that remains open year-round.

How to book campgrounds near Sussex
Wisconsin's state parks and forests, including all three Kettle Moraine units, use a single reservation system. Campsites can be reserved online through the Wisconsin State Park System website or by calling 1-888-947-2757, up to 11 months before the planned arrival date. All standard sites at state parks, southern forests, and recreation areas are reservable, with no walk-up sites available. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required for every vehicle entering a state property.
Private campgrounds handle bookings directly. Country View Campground, Lake Lenwood Beach and Campground, Timber Trail Campground, Lazy Days Campground, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Caledonia all take reservations through their own websites or by phone. Deposits and multi-night minimums on holiday weekends are common; three-night minimums for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are standard at most private parks in the area.
What to expect
Sites near Sussex range from full-hookup RV pads at family resorts to primitive, no-hookup loops inside the Kettle Moraine forest. Private parks such as Lake Lenwood Beach and Campground and Country View Campground offer sites with electric, water, and sewer connections, along with showers, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. State-forest campgrounds vary: some sites offer electric hookups, while others, including the Pinewoods campground in the Southern Unit, have no electricity at all, so travelers relying on air conditioning should confirm hookup type before booking.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain with plenty of mosquitoes in June and July. Firewood rules are strict: firewood from more than 10 miles away is not permitted on Wisconsin state park or forest properties, and campers should buy firewood locally or on site.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Sussex, WI?
Good news: RV rental in Sussex, WI is one of the more affordable ways to vacation in southeast Wisconsin. On RVezy, you'll find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes from $250 to $400 per night. Pricing depends on season, RV size, and included add-ons. Want a cheap RV rental in Sussex? Book midweek, target shoulder season (late April or September), and look for travel trailers if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: many Sussex hosts offer multi-night discounts of 10 to 20 percent for stays of a week or longer, perfect for a leisurely Wisconsin loop.
travelwisconsin.com/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Sussex, Wisconsin?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sussex. Wisconsin only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for RVs longer than 45 feet, and virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy falls well under that limit. You'll need to be at least 25 years old with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license. That's it, no endorsements, no road tests, no extra paperwork before your Wisconsin RV trip.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Sussex protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Sussex booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into the booking. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind whether you are parked at Pike Lake or rolling down I-94. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your comfort, hosts do not pick it for you. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so you can focus on enjoying your motorhome rental in Sussex. Pro tip: review the coverage summary at checkout so you know exactly what is included before you hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Sussex RV rental?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking, not individual hosts. Your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and host cancellations result in a full refund or travel credit to the guest. Because Wisconsin weather can shift quickly in spring and fall, this consistent platform-level policy matters. Cancellation details are shown during checkout rather than on each listing, so review them before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best RV rental in Sussex, then use the cancellation window if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Sussex?
Yes, plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Sussex welcome four-legged co-pilots. Filter for Pet-Friendly on RVezy and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers ready for your dog. Some hosts add a small pet cleaning fee, which is shown clearly before booking. Once on the road, Sussex sits near excellent dog-friendly spots: the Bugline Trail runs right through town for morning walks, and Menomonee Park in Lannon allows leashed dogs on its trails. Heading further out? Pets on leash are welcome at most Wisconsin state park and forest campsites, including units of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, though some designated pet-free areas exist, so check the specific campground before booking. Message your host before booking to confirm pet rules for your trip.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in the Sussex area?
Yes, RV delivery in Sussex is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV to your campground, level it, connect the hookups, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. That makes it easy to enjoy a Sussex RV trip without ever towing or driving a big rig yourself. Popular delivery destinations include Country View Campground in Mukwonago, Lake Lenwood Beach and Campground in West Bend, and the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Hartford. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campground address for an exact quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sussex%2C%20WisconsinHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Sussex?
Sussex is a fantastic launchpad for a Wisconsin RV road trip. You're roughly 20 miles northwest of downtown Milwaukee, 80 miles east of Madison, and within easy reach of Wisconsin Dells (about 110 miles northwest), Door County (160 miles northeast), and Devil's Lake State Park (115 miles west). Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), with extra miles available at a per-mile rate that's clearly listed before booking. Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is worth filtering for if you're planning a longer loop. Pro tip: ask your host about their mileage policy before confirming if you're heading to the Upper Peninsula or Chicago.

dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/pikelake/recreation/campingWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Sussex, WI?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Sussex, with daytime highs from 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and warm summer evenings perfect for campfires. July and August are the busiest and hottest months (average highs near 82 degrees), while June and September offer fewer mosquitoes and easier campground bookings. Fall colors typically peak the first two weeks of October across the Kettle Moraine, making it a stunning shoulder season for a Sussex RV trip. Winters are genuinely cold (lows in the teens with snow from December through February), so most campgrounds close by late October. Pro tip: book your summer RV well before March for the best selection.
weather.gov/mkx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I really be okay?
Yes, and you're in great company, first time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios in Sussex. Every RVezy host gives you a complete walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering the generator, water systems, slide-outs, awning, and dump procedures, plus written guides and often a video for reference. You can also message the host any time during your trip with questions. Sussex itself is an easy place to start: the surrounding roads are flat and well-maintained, and you're only 10 minutes from Highway 41 and I-94 once you get your bearings. Pro tip: request delivery for your first trip so the host levels and connects the RV at the campground while you watch and learn.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Harrington Beach State Park or rolling down US-41. Roadside assistance covers tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified repair facility. For RV-specific questions, such as an awning that will not retract or a fridge acting up, your host is your first call. Most Sussex hosts respond quickly and many can troubleshoot remotely. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pulling out of Sussex.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Sussex RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most RVezy rentals in Sussex, and popular routes include heading south to Chicago (about 95 miles), east to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, or north to Door County. Canada trips may be allowed with host approval and can have insurance considerations, so message the host before booking if a cross-border run is in your plans. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a classic RV road trip from Sussex is the Lake Michigan Circle Tour, looping through Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula, and back down through Michigan over 7 to 10 days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Wisconsin RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on your trip, but it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Sussex average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A motorhomes get 6 to 10 mpg, and campervans (Class B) often hit 15 to 20 mpg. Wisconsin gas prices typically run a bit below the national average (around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded in the Milwaukee metro at last check). For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before leaving Sussex at the Costco or Kwik Trip stations along Silver Spring Drive, where prices tend to beat highway exits.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sussex?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best campgrounds near Sussex. Wisconsin State Park campsites (including Pike Lake, Kettle Moraine, and Harrington Beach) open for reservations 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR system at 1-888-947-2757 or online, and summer weekends at popular parks fill within days of opening. Private parks like Country View Campground and Wisconsin State Fair RV Park accept reservations through ReserveAmerica and book up 2 to 4 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) require a 3-night minimum at Wisconsin state parks, so plan accordingly and reserve the moment your window opens.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat are driving conditions like around Sussex?
Driving an RV around Sussex is genuinely manageable, the village sits in gently rolling glacial terrain with wide, well-maintained roads. Highway 164 and Silver Spring Drive are the main corridors, and you're a short hop from US-41/45 and I-94 for longer trips. Watch for rush-hour traffic heading into Milwaukee (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays) and be ready for sudden summer thunderstorms that can drop visibility quickly. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, which is why most rentals operate May through October. Pro tip: avoid taking a tall Class A through downtown Milwaukee, stick to the highway loop (I-894) and you'll skip the low clearances entirely.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Sussex?
Campgrounds around Sussex range from full-hookup resorts to rustic state forest sites, so you can match the experience to your style. Pike Lake Unit of Kettle Moraine offers electric sites, flush toilets, showers, and a sanitary dump station. Long Lake Campground in the Northern Unit has 200 sites with showers and flush toilets. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), head to Wisconsin State Fair RV Park or Country View Campground in Mukwonago. Most state parks have potable water fill stations and a central dump station. Pro tip: arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks if you're heading to a rustic site, and ask the campground office where the dump station is located on the way in.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/kms/recreation/campingWhat is actually inside the RVs I can rent in Sussex?
Most RVs on RVezy in Sussex come fully equipped so you can move in and start cooking. Expect a queen or king bed plus bunks or convertible dinettes that sleep additional guests, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning and a furnace, and seatbelts for safe travel. Many also include a generator, outdoor awning, outdoor speakers, and a TV. WiFi varies and some hosts include a mobile hotspot, and most campervan rentals in Sussex come with linens, kitchenware, and basic camping gear. Pro tip: review the listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-friendly outlet or a kid-safe layout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sussex%2C%20WisconsinWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Sussex hosts offer a range of add-ons to customize your family RV trip in Sussex. Common options include camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators (sometimes included, sometimes a daily fee), bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup is usually from the host's address (most hosts are within 10 to 20 miles of Sussex village center), and delivery is widely available, especially to Pike Lake, Country View Campground, and Wisconsin State Fair RV Park. Mileage policies vary, with many hosts including 100 to 150 miles per day and extras at a clearly listed per-mile rate, while some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator add-on for a turnkey first trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sussex%2C%20WisconsinHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled securely through the RVezy platform, with no cash exchanges with hosts. You pay for your booking by credit card on the site, and a separate refundable security deposit is pre-authorized by RVezy a few days before pickup and released after return assuming there is no damage or excessive cleaning. The security deposit amount is set per listing and shown before you book. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, and return it with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement. Pro tip: complete the walkthrough carefully with your host, it is the best protection for both sides.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I find a local insider's pick near Sussex?
Here is a Sussex local tip: the Bugline Recreation Trail, a rail-trail of roughly 15 miles, starts in the Sussex area and connects through Menomonee Park toward Merton, perfect for an evening bike ride after setting up camp. If you are spending a day exploring, drive about 20 minutes to Holy Hill Basilica in Hubertus, where the panoramic view from the observation tower is among the best in southeastern Wisconsin, especially during fall color season in early October. Pair that with a stop at a small Kettle Moraine winery or local supper club for a great day off the RV. Pro tip: time your Holy Hill visit for late afternoon to catch the light over the Kettle Moraine.
