Mare Barn Campground at Fort Robinson State Park sits within a historic 22,000-acre park in the Pine Ridge region of northwest Nebraska, just west of Crawford along U.S. Route 20. Designed with equestrian travelers in mind, the campground is located adjacent to the Mare Barn stables — a facility with 59 horse stalls — and offers direct access to more than 20 miles of scenic horseback riding trails through pine forests, open meadows, and dramatic buttes. Campsites feature full hookups with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water and sewer connections, grills, and picnic tables, with modern restrooms and coin-operated laundry nearby. Beyond equestrian activities, guests can explore 60-plus miles of hiking and biking trails, fish for trout, swim in the park's aquatic center, or join stagecoach and Jeep tours. Fort Robinson carries deep historical significance as the site where Sioux Chief Crazy Horse died and once served as the world's largest military horse remount depot. The Fort Robinson History Center and Trailside Museum offer rich interpretive experiences, while The Post Playhouse hosts live theater each summer. Nearby attractions include Toadstool Geologic Park and Agate Fossil Beds, with the Black Hills reachable as a day trip. Wildlife including bison, Texas longhorns, and over 150 bird species round out this exceptional Nebraska destination.
