Late May through early September is the peak window, when daytime highs are warm, park concessions and horse rides are running, and campground loops are fully open. June and July bring long daylight and the richest program schedule, though afternoon thunderstorms are common on the High Plains. September and early October offer cooler nights, smaller crowds, and clear skies that suit RV travel, while winter visits are quiet and scenic but cold, with possible snow and ice on park roads.

The Fort Robinson History Museum interprets the post's cavalry, Indian Wars, and World War II K-9 training history inside the original 1905 headquarters building. Exhibits, artifacts, and self-guided walking tours of the parade ground anchor a visit. Parking near the museum suits standard tow vehicles; oversized RV parking is available at the main day-use lots.
Guided horseback rides through ponderosa pine ridges and buttes are a signature Fort Robinson experience offered by the park concessionaire. Rides depart from the stables near the main lodge area on a seasonal schedule. RV renters can park at the lodge lot and walk to the stables.
Seasonal jeep tours and stagecoach or buggy rides give an overview of the park's history and scenery without requiring a hike. Tours cover the old post, overlooks, and wildlife areas. Departure points have ample RV-friendly parking.
Smiley Canyon is a scenic loop drive through the western backcountry of the park, passing bison and longhorn pastures and climbing into the buttes. The route is suitable for most vehicles in dry conditions, but tight turns and grades make it better for tow vehicles than large motorhomes. Pullouts allow safe wildlife viewing.
Trails climbing toward the Red Cloud Buttes offer panoramic views over the old fort and Pine Ridge country. Routes range from short interpretive walks to longer ridge hikes. Trailheads near the lodge and campground have RV-accessible day-use parking.
Just north of the park, the Soldier Creek Wilderness offers primitive hiking and horseback trails through restored grassland and pine stands. The Trooper and Boots and Saddle Trails, marked with trail posts, provide access into and through the wilderness, with trailheads at the adjacent Soldier Creek Campground. Motorized vehicles are prohibited within the wilderness. fs.usda.gov/r02/nebraska/recreation/soldier-creek-wilderness
Carter P. Johnson Lake and the park's ponds are stocked for bank and small-boat fishing, with trout and warm-water species depending on the season. A Nebraska fishing permit is required. Lake access includes RV-friendly pull-ins and picnic sites.
Fort Robinson maintains herds of bison and longhorn cattle, and the surrounding Pine Ridge supports elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. The area provides habitat for elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer, turkeys, coyotes, bobcats, eagles, hawks, and numerous other wildlife species. Early morning and evening drives along park roads offer the best sightings.

The park lies about 3 miles west of Crawford, Nebraska on U.S. Highway 20, roughly 25 miles west of Chadron and about 55 miles east of the Wyoming state line. Denver is approximately 250 miles south (about 4.5 hours), and Rapid City, South Dakota is about 100 miles north (roughly 2 hours). The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Rapid City Regional Airport, with Chadron Municipal handling limited regional service.
