Paso Picacho Campground sits at 5,000 feet elevation within Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, approximately 50 miles east of San Diego and 15 miles south of Julian in California's inland mountains. This scenic destination features 85 campsites nestled in oak woodland forests interspersed with pine trees and meadows crisscrossed by creeks, offering a serene mountain camping experience.
The campground provides comprehensive RV and tent camping amenities including water access, flush toilet restrooms, hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and an RV dump station. Wi-Fi access is available, and firewood and ice can be purchased on-site. Dogs are welcome, making it an excellent choice for pet-friendly travel.
Paso Picacho serves as a premier trailhead hub with access to over 100 miles of diverse trails throughout the state park. Popular hikes include the 2-mile ascent to Stonewall Peak (5,700 feet elevation) and the 3.5-mile trek to Cuyamaca Peak (6,512 feet elevation), both offering expansive vistas of deserts, coastline, and Lake Cuyamaca. The park accommodates hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, providing abundant outdoor recreation opportunities year-round. Reservations are available April through November, with first-come, first-served camping available December through March.
