Alafia River State Park, FL, United States
The park entrance is off CR 39 near Lithia, roughly 25 miles and 35 to 45 minutes southeast of downtown Tampa, about 15 miles from Brandon, and about 40 miles from Lakeland. Most RVers approach via I-75 to SR 60 east, then south on CR 39, a route with no tunnels or significant grades. Rural approach roads can be narrow in spots, so larger rigs should use mapping designed for RVs and avoid shortcuts through residential neighborhoods. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Tampa International Airport (TPA), with Orlando International (MCO) roughly 90 miles away.
Late October through April is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with mild days, low humidity, and fewer mosquitoes. Winter and early spring also deliver the best trail conditions for mountain biking and horseback riding, since summer rains can leave the clay-based tracks slick. Summer months bring heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and occasional tropical systems, so shoulder seasons in October and April offer a good balance of warm weather and manageable crowds.

Alafia River State Park offers one of the most technically demanding off-road bike trail networks in Florida, with steep climbs, drops, and bermed turns across former phosphate mining terrain. The system is signed by difficulty from beginner to expert, with trailhead parking that can accommodate tow vehicles after dropping trailers at camp.
The park maintains a dedicated equestrian trail system and a separate equestrian camping area for visitors bringing horses. Riders explore reclaimed hills, hammocks, and open pine flatwoods away from the main family campground.
Hikers can access several miles of foot trails winding through hardwood hammocks, scrub, and along the Alafia River's south prong. Shorter interpretive loops near the day-use area are suitable for families and casual walkers.
Anglers fish the South Prong of the Alafia River and reclaimed pit lakes inside the park for bass, bluegill, and catfish. A valid Florida freshwater fishing license is required for visitors 16 and older.
Visitors can launch canoes and kayaks to explore the South Prong of the Alafia, a narrow, winding blackwater stream shaded by cypress and oaks. Water levels vary with seasonal rainfall, so check conditions before heading out.
The park's mix of pine flatwoods, scrub, and wetlands supports white-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, wading birds, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. Early morning walks along quieter trails offer the best chance at sightings.
Picnic areas near the park entrance provide covered tables, grills, and restrooms within a short walk of parking. The day-use zone is convenient for RV travelers wanting a shaded lunch break without moving camp.

Everything worked perfectly! Moises is a great host, he responded to all my questions and calls and even provided his personal camping app, which is a great find if you are into off grid cool safe camping spots to discover. It's not fancy on the outside, but the price is good and all the features are functional.

Gary is an exceptional host! The RV was clean, well equipped even down to salt and pepper in the kitchen. All the amenities you will need are included. Camp chairs, campsite mat, towels, even a gas grill that hooks into the RV propane supply. Excellent experience!
