Late May through mid-September is the prime window, with warm days, open campground loops, and active freighter traffic on the St. Clair River. July and August bring peak crowds, so reservations are recommended well in advance. Shoulder months like May, September, and early October offer cooler temperatures, fewer mosquitoes, and excellent fall color along the prairie and woodland trails, which can be ideal for RV travel.

The park's riverfront day-use area is one of Michigan's best spots to watch oceangoing and Great Lakes freighters pass within a few hundred feet of shore. Benches, picnic tables, and paved paths make it accessible, and the adjacent lot has room for larger vehicles.
Algonac protects some of Michigan's last remaining lakeplain prairie, a globally rare ecosystem. Interpretive loop trails wind through grasslands and oak savanna, showcasing wildflowers in summer and golden grasses in fall.
The St. Clair River and nearby Lake St. Clair are known for walleye, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and muskellunge. Public boat launches in the town of Algonac, just minutes from the park, provide easy access for day trips.
Flat paved roads and shared-use paths make the park a relaxed spot for casual cycling. Riders can connect to local roads leading into the town of Algonac for food and shopping.
The park's mix of prairie, oak savanna, and river shoreline attracts grassland songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, and spring and fall migrants. Birders should bring binoculars and scan both the grasslands and the river.
A short drive and ferry crossing from the park reaches Harsens Island and the St. Clair Flats, North America's largest freshwater delta. The area offers paddling, birding, and waterfront dining, though RVs should park on the mainland before ferrying across.
Large open lawns, mature shade trees, picnic tables, and grills front the St. Clair River. The area is well suited to groups and includes a playground and restrooms.

Algonac State Park, MI, United States
The park is roughly an hour (about 50 miles) northeast of downtown Detroit via I-94 and M-29, and about 30 miles south of Port Huron. Most RVs can reach the entrance on M-29 (Pointe Tremble Road) without low clearances or steep grades, though drivers should watch for narrow two-lane stretches, seasonal roadwork, and the Blue Water Bridge crossing at Port Huron if coming from Canada. Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, approximately 75 miles southwest of the park.
