Best time to visit Bass River State Park

Late spring through early fall is the most popular window, with May, June, and September offering warm days, cooler nights, and fewer biting insects than midsummer. July and August bring peak swimming weather at Lake Absegami but also the largest crowds and the highest mosquito and tick activity in the Pine Barrens. Shoulder months in April and October are ideal for RV travel with mild temperatures, open campground loops, and quieter trails. Winter visits are possible for day use, but many facilities and loops operate on a reduced schedule.

How to get to Bass River State Park

The park sits just off the Garden State Parkway near exit 52 in New Gretna, about 25 miles north of Atlantic City and roughly 45 to 55 miles east of Philadelphia, a one-hour drive in light traffic. From New York City, plan on about 100 miles and roughly two hours via the Garden State Parkway. The route is generally flat with no mountain passes or low tunnels, but the final approach uses narrow Pine Barrens roads with soft sandy shoulders, so larger RVs should stay on paved surfaces and watch for tight turns near the campground entrance. Atlantic City International Airport is the closest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers, with Philadelphia International Airport another common option.
