The most comfortable months for RV travel are late October through April, when humidity, mosquitoes, and afternoon thunderstorms ease off and daytime highs stay pleasant. Spring, roughly February to April, is peak wildlife viewing for alligators and migrating birds, while Mardi Gras season brings heavy demand for sites near New Orleans. Summer is hot, humid, and falls inside Atlantic hurricane season, which can trigger closures or evacuations. Fall weekends are a strong shoulder season with cooler nights and smaller crowds.

Paddling the sluggish waters of Bayou Segnette is the signature activity at the park. Visitors can launch kayaks or canoes directly from the park into a network of bayous connected to the Barataria Basin, with chances to spot alligators, herons, and egrets.
Anglers can fish from the banks, piers, or a boat for both freshwater and brackish species. The park sits at the meeting point of fresh swamp and tidal marsh, producing catches that include largemouth bass, catfish, redfish, and speckled trout depending on salinity.
The park maintains a public boat launch used by locals heading into the Barataria estuary. RV travelers towing a boat have paved parking and direct water access to miles of navigable bayous and canals.
Bayou Segnette operates a seasonal wave pool that is one of only a handful of its kind in Louisiana state parks. It typically runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and is a popular cool-down for families camping at the park.
The park's wetlands are prime habitat for American alligators, nutria, raccoons, and more than 100 species of birds. Early mornings on the campground roads and at the boat launch are the best times to see wildlife.
The French Quarter in downtown New Orleans sits about 15 miles from the park. Travelers commonly leave the RV at the campsite and drive across the river for a day of music, food, and historic sightseeing before returning to a quieter bayou-side base.
The Barataria Preserve unit of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park is roughly 20 minutes south of Bayou Segnette. Its boardwalks and trails extend through swamp, marsh, and hardwood forest and complement the water-based recreation at the state park.
Derek and his Cruisin' Claudette Winnebago were amazing hosts for two adult couples for a long weekend. Lots of unbelievable amenities such as zero gravity camping chairs are already onboard. The RV drives well. It’s also a conversation starter like no other.

Bayou Segnette State Park, LA, United States
The park sits just off the Westbank Expressway in Westwego, about 15 minutes from downtown New Orleans via the Crescent City Connection or the Huey P. Long Bridge. Baton Rouge is roughly 80 miles and about 90 minutes west via I-10, and Lafayette is about 2.5 hours west. RV drivers should note the Huey P. Long Bridge has narrow lanes and tall approaches that can feel tight in a high-profile rig, so many travelers prefer the wider Crescent City Connection on US 90 Business. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is about 20 minutes away and is the most convenient option for fly-and-rent RV trips.
