Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best conditions for swimming, clamming, and shoreline recreation on Hood Canal. July and August are peak season, so reservations fill quickly and sites should be booked well in advance. May, June, and September are good shoulder months with fewer crowds, milder temperatures, and generally dry days between passing systems. Winter camping is possible but expect frequent rain, damp sites, and short daylight hours typical of Western Washington.

The park's signature feature is a long saltwater beach along the south shore of Hood Canal. Visitors can wade, swim in warmer months, and enjoy views of the Olympic Mountains across the water. Day-use parking is RV-friendly near the shoreline.
Belfair's tidelands are productive for clams and oysters during open shellfish seasons set by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Harvesters should check current season dates and biotoxin closures before digging. A valid Washington shellfish license is required.
A short interpretive walking route loops through the park's salt marsh and estuary where Big Mission Creek meets Hood Canal. The flat, gravel path is suitable for most visitors and offers good bird-watching for herons, eagles, and shorebirds.
The mix of saltwater, freshwater, forest, and marsh habitats attracts a wide variety of birds year round. Bring binoculars to spot bald eagles, belted kingfishers, great blue herons, and seasonal waterfowl. Early mornings near the estuary are especially productive.
Low tides expose rocky and sandy flats where visitors can spot crabs, sea stars, moon snails, and other intertidal life. Check a local tide chart before heading out to time your walk with the lowest tides. Wear sturdy footwear that can get wet.
The park has picnic tables, kitchen shelters, and open lawn areas suitable for family gatherings. Day-use parking accommodates RVs and tow vehicles near the beach and playground. Restrooms are available near the day-use area.
Road cyclists use nearby SR 300 and local Kitsap routes for scenic rides along Hood Canal. Traffic is generally light but shoulders are narrow in spots, so riders should use lights and high-visibility gear. The campground makes a convenient base for multi-day rides.

Belfair State Park, WA, United States
The park sits along State Route 300 (NE Beck Road) about 3 miles west of the town of Belfair and roughly an hour and a half drive from Seattle via SR 16 and SR 3 through Bremerton and Gorst. From Tacoma it is approximately 50 miles and about 75 minutes via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and SR 16. RV drivers should note that SR 3 and SR 302 have rolling hills and a few tight curves, and the approach road through Belfair narrows with limited turnaround options, so lower-clearance rigs and long trailers should plan routes carefully. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, about 70 miles east.
