Late fall through early spring, roughly November through March, is the prime window for visiting, when temperatures are mild, humidity is low, and winter Texas birds and migrants are most active. December through February is peak season for birders, so trails and the tram can be busy on weekends. Shoulder months of April and October still deliver excellent wildlife viewing with fewer crowds, though afternoons can be warm. Summer visits are possible but hot and humid, with heat indices that can make midday activity uncomfortable for RV travelers without strong A/C.

The hawk tower is a multi-story platform overlooking the Rio Grande floodplain, used for spotting migrating raptors and canopy-dwelling birds. It is a short, flat walk from the entrance and one of the park's signature viewpoints.
The Rio Grande Hiking Trail follows the river levee and connects birding blinds and resaca overlooks. It offers quiet walking through native thornscrub, with frequent sightings of green jays, chachalacas, and kiskadees.
A seasonal park tram shuttles visitors through the car-free interior, with stops at major birding sites and feeding stations. It is ideal for those who prefer not to walk or bike the full loop.
Cycling is the most popular way to experience Bentsen's interior roads, which are paved, flat, and closed to public vehicle traffic. Bike rentals are available seasonally at the visitor center.
Multiple bird blinds around the park attract South Texas specialties such as the plain chachalaca, altamira oriole, and green jay. Feeding stations are stocked seasonally and offer close-range photography opportunities.
Resacas, old oxbow channels of the Rio Grande, are scattered through the park and attract herons, ducks, and alligators. Boardwalks and overlooks provide accessible vantage points for photography.
The headquarters building near the entrance houses interpretive exhibits on Rio Grande Valley ecology and the regional World Birding Center network. It is a good starting point for first-time visitors planning a route through the park.

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, TX, United States
The park sits just south of Mission, Texas, off Bentsen Palm Drive, roughly 10 miles west of McAllen and about 70 miles west of South Padre Island. From San Antonio, plan on a drive of about 240 miles, or roughly four hours, mostly on US-281 South. RV drivers should note that US-281 and US-83 through the Rio Grande Valley are wide, flat, and RV-friendly, with no mountain passes or tunnel restrictions, though crosswinds and border-area checkpoints are common. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is McAllen International Airport (MFE), about 20 miles east of the park.
