Late October through April is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and lower risk of heat illness on desert trails. November to March brings the best hiking and biking weather, while February and March can add wildflower bloom and pleasant river paddling conditions. Summer from June through September is dangerously hot, with highs often exceeding 100 F and afternoon thunderstorms that can flash-flood low water crossings on FM 170 and interior roads. Spring break weeks fill quickly, so shoulder dates in early December or late April balance good weather with quieter campsites.

FM 170 is one of the most scenic drives in Texas, hugging the Rio Grande for roughly 50 miles between Presidio and Lajitas. Pullouts at Big Hill, Madera Canyon, and Closed Canyon offer quick stops with RV-friendly parking. The 15 percent Big Hill grade is the main challenge for larger rigs.
Closed Canyon is a short out-and-back hike into a narrow slot canyon cut by Rancherias Creek toward the Rio Grande. The trail is roughly 1.4 miles round trip on a sandy, gently descending floor. The trailhead lot off FM 170 has space for short RVs and tow vehicles.
The Hoodoos Trail is a one-mile loop along the Rio Grande featuring eroded volcanic rock formations and river views. The flat path makes it a quick stop for RV travelers driving FM 170. Parking on the river side accommodates trucks and small motorhomes.
Big Bend Ranch hosts one of the largest backcountry mountain biking networks in Texas, with rugged singletrack reaching deep into the desert. Big Bend Ranch State Park and Lajitas Resort have opened over 135 miles of mountain biking trails. Most trailheads are reached from FM 170 or via the interior road to Sauceda.
Paddlers can launch on the Rio Grande for day trips through Colorado Canyon or multi-day floats from Lajitas to Big Bend National Park. River access points along FM 170 have gravel pull-ins suitable for vehicles with trailers. Outfitters in Terlingua provide rentals and shuttles.
Backpackers can tackle the Rancherias Loop, a multi-day trek of about 19 miles through remote desert mountains. Day hikers can reach Rancherias Falls, an oasis several miles in. RVs should stage at FM 170 trailheads and not attempt the interior dirt roads.
Sauceda is the historic ranch headquarters deep in the park's interior, offering interpretive exhibits and access to the Solitario geologic feature. The 27-mile entry road is rough dirt and not recommended for RVs, so most rigs stay on FM 170 while occupants day-trip in a high-clearance vehicle. Stargazing here is exceptional thanks to extreme darkness.
Big Bend Ranch sits within one of the darkest night-sky regions in the contiguous United States. Riverside campsites along FM 170 give RV travelers unobstructed views of the Milky Way on clear nights. Bring red lights and avoid moonlit weeks for the best experience.

Big Bend Ranch State Park, TX, United States
The park sits along FM 170 between Presidio (about 30 minutes west of the Sauceda turnoff) and Lajitas/Terlingua (about 1 hour east), with Alpine roughly 2 hours north via US 67 and TX 118. From El Paso the drive is about 4.5 to 5 hours, and from Midland-Odessa about 4 hours. RV drivers should note that FM 170, the River Road, includes a 15 percent grade at the Big Hill near Lajitas, tight curves, and several low water crossings, making it unsuitable for very long trailers and high-profile motorhomes in poor weather. The interior road to Sauceda is 27 miles of rough dirt and is not recommended for any RV. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Midland International (MAF) and El Paso International (ELP).
