Best time to visit Big Bog State Park

Late May through September offers the most comfortable weather, longest daylight, and full access to the boardwalk, campground, and Upper Red Lake. July and August are peak months for swimming, paddling, and warm evenings, while June brings abundant wildflowers and nesting boreal birds (along with active mosquitoes and biting flies). September is an excellent shoulder season for RV travel, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and fall color in the surrounding forest. Winter visits are possible for ice fishing and skiing, but the campground offers no winter RV services.

Things to do at Big Bog State Park

  • Bog Boardwalk Easy
    RV parking available

The Bog Boardwalk is a mile-long accessible boardwalk that extends from the north unit parking area into the heart of the peatland. It offers the easiest way for visitors of any ability to experience rare bog plants such as pitcher plants, sundews, and orchids without sinking into the mossy ground. dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00232

  • Upper Red Lake Fishing
    RV parking available

Upper Red Lake is one of Minnesota's premier walleye fisheries, with shore and boat access directly from the park's south unit. A public boat ramp and fishing pier make it easy for RV campers to launch small craft or cast from shore. dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00232

  • South Unit Swimming Beach Easy
    RV parking available

The park's designated swimming beach on Upper Red Lake offers a shallow, sandy area ideal for families. The adjacent picnic area and restrooms are a short walk from the south unit campground.

  • Bog Birding Easy
    RV parking available

Big Bog is a hotspot for boreal bird species rarely seen elsewhere in Minnesota, including Connecticut warbler, great gray owl, and sandhill crane. Birders can walk the boardwalk at dawn or drive the forest roads surrounding the park for varied habitat.

  • Paddling Upper Red Lake Moderate
    RV parking available

Kayakers and canoeists can launch from the south unit to explore the vast, shallow waters of Upper Red Lake. Winds can build quickly on the open lake, so paddlers should check forecasts and stay close to shore.

  • Winter Skiing and Snowmobiling Moderate

In winter, the park connects to regional snowmobile trails and offers cross-country skiing on ungroomed routes. Ice fishing on Upper Red Lake is a major draw from December through March.

  • Visitor Center and Interpretive Programs Easy
    RV parking available

The park's visitor contact station at the north unit features exhibits on peatland ecology, logging history, and Ojibwe heritage. Seasonal naturalist programs introduce RV travelers to the bog's unique plants and wildlife.

The park is reached via Minnesota State Highway 72 in Waskish, about 45 miles north of Bemidji (roughly a 1-hour drive) and about 110 miles from Grand Forks, North Dakota (about 2.5 hours). From the Twin Cities it is roughly 260 miles, or a 5-hour drive via US-2 and MN-72. The roads are paved, flat, and RV-friendly with no tunnels or steep grades, though the route is remote with limited fuel and services, so RVers should fuel up in Bemidji or Blackduck.
