Best time to visit Big Lagoon State Park

March through May and October through November offer the most comfortable conditions for RV travel, with warm days, cooler nights, and fewer biting insects than in midsummer. Summer brings hot, humid weather, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak demand for beachfront campsites. Winter stays mild and quiet, making it a popular season for snowbirds, though water temperatures are too cool for most swimmers. Shoulder seasons are ideal for birding and paddling.

Things to do at Big Lagoon State Park

  • East Beach Boardwalk and Swim Area Easy
    RV parking available

The East Beach Boardwalk crosses dunes and salt marsh to a sandy swimming beach on Big Lagoon. RV travelers can park at the main day-use lot, which accommodates larger vehicles, and walk a few hundred yards to the water. Restrooms and picnic pavilions are on site.

  • Observation Tower Easy
    RV parking available

A multi-level wooden observation tower offers panoramic views over the salt marshes, Big Lagoon, and Perdido Key. It is a short, flat walk from the main parking area and a top spot for sunset photography and birding. Stairs lead to upper decks.

  • Kayaking and Paddleboarding on Big Lagoon Easy

Big Lagoon provides calm, protected water for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding between the mainland and Perdido Key. Paddlers can launch from the park boat ramp and explore marsh edges, seagrass flats, and shoreline wildlife. Rentals are available from nearby outfitters.

  • Sand Pine Trail Easy

The Sand Pine Trail is a flat hiking loop through coastal pine flatwoods and scrub habitat. It connects to additional footpaths and the Grand Lagoon overlook for a longer walk. Expect sandy footing and limited shade in open stretches.

  • Saltwater Fishing
    RV parking available

Anglers fish for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and Spanish mackerel from the park shoreline and boat ramp. A valid Florida saltwater fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older. The boat ramp has trailer parking suitable for tow vehicles.

  • Bird Watching on the Great Florida Birding Trail Easy
    RV parking available

Big Lagoon is a designated site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Habitats range from pine flatwoods to salt marsh and open beach, drawing herons, egrets, ospreys, and migratory warblers. The observation tower is a favorite vantage point.

  • Picnicking at Long Point Easy
    RV parking available

Long Point is a grassy day-use area with covered pavilions, grills, and shoreline access. Large paved pull-throughs near the picnic area make it workable for RVs on a day visit. It is a quieter alternative to the main East Beach area.

We absolutely loved staying in John's RV. If you are worried about the AC not being cold enough, have no fear, it works wonderfully even in Florida's heat. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your wonderful RV. If we need to rent again, we will absolutely be reaching out.

Wow, we had a ball in this camper! Me, my husband and our 3 1/2 year old son. We were all comfortable, beds slept great and this camper was CLEAN, looked brand new! The West are so friendly, we can't wait to rent with them again.

Cannot recommend Auburn RV Rentals enough! We were trying to coordinate a busy birthday weekend, including picking up the camper, and Jeff was nice enough to text the morning before our reservation and offer free delivery and setup. Everything was perfect—bedding, towels, kitchen essentials, coffee—everything! We can’t wait to rent from Jeff and Auburn RV Rentals again!

How to get to Big Lagoon State Park

The park sits on Gulf Beach Highway (CR 292A) about 10 miles southwest of downtown Pensacola, roughly a 20 minute drive, and about 60 miles east of Mobile, Alabama, via I-10. Pensacola International Airport is the closest airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about 20 miles northeast. RV drivers should note that the approach is flat coastal highway with no mountain passes or tunnel restrictions, but the final miles include low-speed residential roads, and the nearby Theo Baars Bridge to Perdido Key has posted weight limits for commercial vehicles. Watch for low overhead tree canopy in the campground loops.
