Buckhorn Beach is the park's designated swim area on Castle Rock Lake with sand shoreline and shallow entry. The day-use parking lot accommodates vehicles with trailers and is a short walk to the water. Picnic tables and grills are available nearby.
The Barrens Nature Trail is a short interpretive loop through oak savanna and prairie restoration habitat. Signs describe the fire-dependent ecosystem and the wildlife it supports. The flat surface makes it accessible to most visitors.
The Turtle Pond Boardwalk carries visitors over marsh and open water for close views of turtles, frogs, and wading birds. It is an easy walk suitable for families and a popular spot at dawn and dusk for wildlife photography.
Castle Rock Lake is a large Wisconsin River flowage known for walleye, musky, northern pike, bass, and panfish. Buckhorn State Park provides a boat landing and shoreline fishing access points within the park. A Wisconsin fishing license is required.
Paddlers can launch kayaks and canoes to explore the park's quiet backwater bays and islands. The sheltered peninsula shoreline offers beginner-friendly water when winds are calm on the main lake. Rentals are available seasonally in the park.
Buckhorn's trail system links the campground, beach, boardwalk, and interpretive areas through pine and oak forest. Most routes are short, flat, and combine well into longer loops for an afternoon outing. Trailheads have parking suitable for tow vehicles.
The park's mix of lake, marsh, prairie, and forest supports sandhill cranes, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, and a variety of waterfowl. Early morning and evening are the best times to spot wildlife along the boardwalk and quiet shoreline. Binoculars are recommended.
In winter the park opens for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing on Castle Rock Lake. Trails are not groomed but are open to self-propelled use when snow cover allows. RV camping is not available in winter.
Simply Amazing and super accommodating. I had a very moving schedule due to weather and was flying own aircraft to the site of delivery. Handled my movements and requests graciously and is super lovely RV. Was perfect for our needs and owner is exceptional.

Buckhorn State Park, WI, United States
The park sits off State Highway 58 near Necedah, roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive north of Wisconsin Dells and about 90 minutes northwest of Madison via I-90/94 and WI-58. From Milwaukee plan on about three hours, and from Minneapolis-Saint Paul about three and a half hours via I-94. Roads into the park are generally flat with no mountain passes or tunnels, though the final county and park roads are two-lane rural routes where RV drivers should watch for soft shoulders and wildlife. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee and Dane County Regional in Madison.
