Late June through early September brings the most reliable weather for RV travel, with warm days, open mountain passes, and full campground services on the reservoir. July and August are peak season, when nearby Cody and the Yellowstone East Entrance corridor draw heavy traffic, so reservations are strongly recommended. May, early June, and September are good shoulder windows with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and excellent fishing, though spring winds on the reservoir can be strong. Winter visits are limited to day use as facilities and water systems are shut down for the cold season.

Buffalo Bill Reservoir is the centerpiece of the park, with two boat ramps and open water for motorboating, sailing, and fishing for cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Strong afternoon winds also draw windsurfers and kiteboarders. RV-friendly parking is available at the developed boat ramps near the campgrounds.
The visitor center perches on top of the historic concrete arch dam at the eastern end of the reservoir, with exhibits on the Shoshone Project, the dam's construction, and regional history. The dam is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pull-outs along the highway accommodate larger vehicles.
The Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway follows US 14/16/20 from Cody west along the North Fork of the Shoshone River toward Yellowstone. The byway runs about 32 miles west of Cody in northwestern Wyoming and continues to within roughly 20 miles of the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Numerous pullouts provide views of volcanic rock formations and wildlife.
The North Shore Bay area on the reservoir's north side offers swimming, picnicking, and shoreline access close to the developed campground. Day-use parking is sized for trucks with trailers and RVs. The setting is open and exposed, so afternoon shade is limited.
The park sits at the eastern edge of the Absaroka Range and the Shoshone National Forest, where bighorn sheep, mule deer, elk, and the occasional bear or moose can be spotted along the reservoir and river corridor. Early morning and evening at the upper end of the reservoir near the inflows are particularly productive.
Buffalo Bill State Park makes a strategic basecamp for day trips into Yellowstone via the East Entrance over Sylvan Pass. The corridor lies roughly 20 miles east of the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. RVers should plan for steep grades and weather changes on the pass.
Just east of the park, Cody offers the Buffalo Bill Center of the West museum complex, nightly summer rodeos, and full RV resupply options. The downtown is laid out in a grid that is navigable with larger rigs, and several lots accommodate RV parking. It is the closest town for groceries, fuel, propane, and dump services.
A fantastic RV for 2 adults and 2 kids to get around the Yellowstone area. An optimal size for our family and getting around. The advantage of this RV over many other rentals is that is comes ‘fully loaded’, all as part of the package. Communication was prompt, clear and positive. We had a great experience and would highly recommend this RV. Thank you Amber.

Buffalo Bill State Park, WY, United States
The park entrance sits about 9 miles west of Cody, Wyoming, on US Highway 14/16/20, roughly a 1.5 hour drive from Billings, Montana, and about 50 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. From Cody, take U.S. Highway 14/16/20 west; the corridor continues toward the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. RV drivers should be prepared for the narrow, lighted Shoshone Canyon tunnels just west of Cody and for steep grades and switchbacks continuing west over Sylvan Pass into Yellowstone, where length and weight restrictions apply on some park roads. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Yellowstone Regional Airport (COD) in Cody, with larger options at Billings Logan International (BIL).
