Best time to visit Burgess Falls State Park

Spring, from March through May, is the best time to visit, when the Falling Water River runs high and all four waterfalls are at peak flow. Fall, from mid-October through early November, is a close second for mild temperatures, low humidity, and brilliant hardwood color above the gorge. Summer visits are pleasant in the morning but can be hot and humid, and the overlook trails are busiest on summer weekends. Winter is quiet and the falls are still impressive, though trails can be icy after cold snaps and some sections close during hazardous conditions.

Things to do at Burgess Falls State Park

  • Burgess Falls Overlook Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Burgess Falls Overlook Trail is the park's signature hike, leading about three-quarters of a mile one way along the river to viewpoints of the Upper, Middle, and main Burgess Falls. The route includes stairs and rocky sections near the overlooks.

  • Upper and Middle Falls Viewpoints Easy
    RV parking available

Short walks from the main parking area lead to the Upper Falls and Middle Falls overlooks, both reached before the trail descends toward the main waterfall. These viewpoints give RV day-trippers an accessible way to see two of the park's four cascades without a long hike.

  • Ridge Top Trail Easy

The Ridge Top Trail follows the high ground above the Falling Water River gorge and offers a quieter alternative to the main overlook path. It links back to the primary trail system for a short loop through upland hardwood forest.

  • Service Road to Base of Falls Moderate

A wider gravel service road provides a less steep route toward the base area below the main falls when open. Conditions vary, so check current trail status with park staff before heading down.

  • Picnicking and Day-Use Area Easy
    RV parking available

The day-use area near the parking lot has picnic tables, a pavilion, and restrooms for visitors. It is a convenient midday stop for RV travelers passing through Middle Tennessee on I-40.

  • Fishing on the Falling Water River Easy

Anglers can fish the Falling Water River and the backwaters of Center Hill Reservoir within park boundaries. A valid Tennessee fishing license is required for anglers of age.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching

The gorge and surrounding forest support a variety of songbirds, raptors, deer, and seasonal wildflowers. Early morning and late afternoon along the overlook trail are the most productive times for viewing.

How to get to Burgess Falls State Park

The park sits off Highway 135 about 8 miles south of Cookeville, Tennessee, and roughly 11 miles north of Sparta, with both towns offering fuel, groceries, and RV services. From Nashville it is about 80 miles east via Interstate 40 (around a 90 minute drive), and from Knoxville it is about 110 miles west on I-40. The access road into the park is paved but narrow with tight turns near the day-use area, so very large motorhomes and long trailers should use the main paved lot and avoid the smaller overlook pull-offs. Nashville International Airport (BNA) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent RV trips.
