How to get to Burlingame State Park

Burlingame State Park sits just off US Route 1 in Charlestown, Rhode Island, about 40 miles south of Providence (roughly a 50-minute drive) and about 45 miles southwest of Newport. From the west, it is about 40 miles from New London, Connecticut, via I-95 and US 1. RV drivers should note that US Route 1 is the main access corridor and includes some divided-highway sections with U-turn-style intersections that require wider swings for large rigs; I-95 is the most RV-friendly approach before exiting to US 1. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) in Warwick, Rhode Island, about an hour north.

Best time to visit Burlingame State Park

Late May through early October is the prime window, when the campground is open, Watchaug Pond is warm enough for swimming, and beach days on the nearby Atlantic coast are at their best. July and August bring the warmest weather and the largest crowds, so reservations fill quickly on summer weekends. Shoulder seasons in late spring and September offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier site availability, which is ideal for RV renters wanting a quieter trip. The campground typically closes for the off-season in late fall and reopens in spring.

Things to do at Burlingame State Park

  • Swimming at Watchaug Pond Easy
    RV parking available

The designated swimming area at Burlingame Picnic Area offers freshwater swimming on Watchaug Pond with a sandy beach and lifeguards in summer. The picnic area has large paved parking suitable for RVs day-use.

  • Vin Gormley Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Vin Gormley Trail is an approximately 8-mile loop that circles Watchaug Pond through mixed hardwood and pine forest. It is the park's signature hike and is rated moderate due to length and occasional wet, rooty sections.

  • Kimball Wildlife Refuge Easy

Kimball Wildlife Refuge is a quiet Audubon-managed preserve on the south shore of Watchaug Pond with easy walking trails through forest and pond-edge habitat. It is a good spot for birding and short family-friendly walks.

  • Boating and fishing on Watchaug Pond Easy
    RV parking available

Watchaug Pond has a state boat ramp suitable for kayaks, canoes, and small motorboats, with good fishing for largemouth bass, pickerel, and panfish. The ramp parking area can accommodate trailers and tow vehicles.

  • Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge Easy
    RV parking available

Ninigret NWR is a short drive from the campground and offers flat walking trails around a former naval airfield and the shoreline of Ninigret Pond. Paved lots make it easy to visit with a tow vehicle.

  • Misquamicut State Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Misquamicut State Beach is a classic Rhode Island Atlantic beach about a 20-minute drive from Burlingame, with a long sandy shoreline, lifeguards, and a large paved lot. It is the most popular coastal day trip from the park.

  • East Beach (Ninigret Conservation Area) Easy

East Beach offers a more natural, dune-backed stretch of Atlantic shoreline just south of the park. Access is via a sand road, so visitors typically drive in a tow vehicle rather than a motorhome.

Awesome experience with the van! Scott was great at promptly answering questions when we had them and the van was just right to road trip and park. Easy to maneuver, great safety features, and convenient for general creature comforts. Really appreciated the experience and would absolutely rent again!

Our camper van rental experience was a pre retirement trial for my wife, our precious lil Yorkie & me. We are new to the van life and this was our first time driving & living out of a camper van. The trip exceeded our expectations on many levels from putting together a list of ideas & “to do’s” for our future custom camper van to the overall positive learning experience thanks to our incredibly insightful and gracious host. Scott was an exceptional host, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the operation of the van inside & out. During our trip, Scott would respond to our text questions promptly, which was very comforting to know he was there for us if needed.

Kevin was great in delivering and setting up the unit and going over the “how to”. It was clean - spacious enough to fit our family of 5 - and ran into no issues on our weekend rental. Highly recommended.

My family had a great time camping with Maria and Kevin’s camper. They were very responsive when we needed help and friendly during drop off and pickup. Will book with them again if we don’t have our own camper next year!
