Things to do at Cacapon Resort State Park

  • Hike Cacapon Mountain Overlook Easy

The Cacapon Mountain Overlook is the park's signature viewpoint, looking east across the Potomac Valley toward Maryland. The drive up follows a steep mountain road, and a short walk leads from the parking area to the overlook. Larger RVs should leave the rig at the campground or lodge lot and take a tow vehicle.

  • Ziler Loop and Central Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Ziler Loop links several of the park's central trails for a forested out-and-back through hardwoods on the lower mountain. The route is popular with hikers and trail runners and connects to longer ridge climbs for those wanting more elevation. Trailhead parking near the nature center can accommodate smaller RVs and tow vehicles.

  • Swim and paddle at the park lake Easy
    RV parking available

The park's small lake offers a sandy swimming beach with seasonal lifeguards and a beach house. Paddleboats and other small craft are available for rent in summer. Day-use parking is close to the beach and works for most RV-class vehicles.

  • Play the Cacapon golf course Easy
    RV parking available

Cacapon's 18-hole championship course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and winds through the lower elevations of the park. The pro shop, driving range, and clubhouse restaurant are open seasonally. The golf course parking area has room for tow vehicles and shorter RVs.

  • Guided horseback rides at the stables Easy

The park stables offer guided trail rides through the forest on a seasonal schedule. Rides are typically open to ages eight and up, and reservations are recommended on weekends. The stable lot is accessible to standard passenger and tow vehicles.

  • Fish the Cacapon River Easy

The Cacapon River runs near the park and is known for smallmouth bass, rock bass, and panfish. Anglers can access public stretches along nearby roads with a valid West Virginia fishing license. The river is also a popular tubing and kayaking run in summer.

  • Visit the Old Inn and nature center Easy
    RV parking available

The Old Inn is a historic CCC-era stone-and-log lodge that now serves as a small museum and gathering space. The adjacent nature center offers interpretive exhibits on the Eastern Panhandle's wildlife and geology. Both sit near the main park road with easy day-use parking.

How to get to Cacapon Resort State Park

The park sits just off US Route 522, about 10 miles south of Berkeley Springs and roughly a 30-minute drive from Hancock, Maryland and Interstate 70. Washington, DC is about 2 hours east via I-270 and I-70, Baltimore is about 2 hours and 15 minutes, and Pittsburgh is about 3 hours northwest. RV drivers should expect rolling Appalachian grades on US 522 and narrow, curving park roads on the climb to ridge-top trailheads and overlooks, so plan a slower pace with larger rigs. The closest major airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Washington Dulles (IAD) and Baltimore/Washington (BWI), each roughly a 2-hour drive.
