Spring (March to May) and fall (September to early November) offer the most comfortable surface temperatures for RV travelers, with mild days and cool nights in the Chihuahuan Desert. Late May through October is prime time for the evening Bat Flight Program at the natural entrance amphitheater. Summer brings high heat and monsoon thunderstorms, while winter is quiet with chilly mornings and generally dry, drivable roads. The cavern itself stays around 56°F year-round, so underground tours are comfortable in any season.

Mild afternoons, cold mornings.
Windy season; watch for high-profile RV gusts.

The Big Room Trail is a 1.25-mile loop through the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America. The Big Room has a shortcut which reduces the walking distance to about 0.6 miles and takes about 45 minutes. Parts of the Big Room Trail are wheelchair accessible. nps.gov/places/carlsbad-cavern.htm
The Natural Entrance Trail hikes visitors into the cavern through its historic opening in the cliffside. The 1.25 mile Natural Entrance Trail is extremely steep, gaining or losing about 750 feet, and the hike takes about one hour on average. This trail is not recommended for visitors with heart or respiratory conditions. nps.gov/places/carlsbad-cavern.htm
The King's Palace Tour is a ranger-led walk into the deepest public portion of the cavern. The tour takes visitors through four highly decorated chambers and into the deepest portion of the cavern open to the public, 830 feet beneath the desert surface. Although not as difficult as the Natural Entrance Trail, this one mile tour does require additional descending and walking up a very steep hill at the end. nps.gov/thingstodo/king-s-palace-tour.htm
The Bat Flight Program is an evening ranger talk followed by the emergence of hundreds of thousands of bats from the natural entrance. Each evening from Memorial Day weekend through October, a ranger program explains the Brazilian free-tailed bats that live in Carlsbad Cavern and visitors watch them emerge. To protect the bats, electronic devices including cameras, cell phones, and tablets are not allowed at the program or surrounding area. nps.gov/thingstodo/bat-flight-program.htm
Walnut Canyon Desert Drive is a 9.5-mile one-way gravel loop through the backcountry above the cavern, with overlooks of the Chihuahuan Desert and Guadalupe foothills. The road is narrow and not recommended for large RVs or trailers; tow vehicles and smaller campervans are better suited. Expect about an hour of driving time with stops at pullouts. nps.gov/cave/planyourvisit/index.htm
Rattlesnake Springs is a shaded picnic area and birding hotspot about a 30-minute drive from the main visitor center. The spring-fed cottonwoods support over 300 bird species and make a cool lunch stop on hot desert days. Paved parking accommodates standard vehicles; large rigs should scout the turnaround before committing. nps.gov/cave/planyourvisit/index.htm
The visitor center offers exhibits on cave geology, wildlife, and park history, plus rental audio guides for the self-guided routes. Informative audio guides are available to rent at the Western National Parks Association store in the visitor center. It is the required starting point for entering the cavern and for purchasing entrance tickets. nps.gov/places/first-time-visitors.htm

Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM, United States
The park visitor center sits off US Highway 62/180 in southeastern New Mexico, reached via a steep, winding 7-mile entrance road from Whites City. Carlsbad, NM is about 30 miles (40 minutes) north, El Paso, TX is roughly 150 miles (2.5 hours) west, and Roswell, NM is about 90 miles (1.5 hours) north. The entrance road includes tight switchbacks and grades that larger rigs and towables should take slowly, and there are no tunnels or low clearances on the main approach. Cavern City Air Terminal in Carlsbad and El Paso International Airport are the closest options for fly-and-rent RV trips.
