Late April through October is the best window for RV travel, with warm days, fully open cave tours, and active interpretive programs. May, June, September, and early October offer the most comfortable weather and thinner crowds than the midsummer peak. July and August bring hot, humid conditions and busy weekends, so midweek stays are easier. Winter trips are possible at the lodge, but cave tour schedules are reduced and campground services may run limited off-season.

Cascade Cave is one of the park's headline show caves, known for an underground waterfall, large rooms, and dripstone formations. The guided tour is moderate and includes stairs, with RV-friendly parking at the visitor center trailhead.
X Cave is a compact show cave named for its crossing passages that form an X shape. The guided walking tour showcases towering columns and stalactites and is a good choice for first-time cave visitors.
Saltpetre Cave is a historic cave where saltpeter was mined for gunpowder, featured on a more rugged ranger-led tour. Expect uneven footing, low ceilings in spots, and a closer look at Kentucky cave history.
Three Bridges Trail is a scenic hiking loop that passes the park's signature natural arches and sandstone bluffs above Tygarts Creek. The route combines easy walking with short, steeper sections through the gorge.
Smoky Valley Lake is a small lake inside the park popular for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Non-motorized boating and bank fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish are the main draws.
The park operates a 9-hole public golf course next to the lodge. The short, walkable layout is open seasonally and welcomes casual players staying in the campground or cottages.
Guided trail rides from the park stables travel through forested ridges and along sandstone cliffs. Rides are seasonal and suited to beginners, with parking large enough for tow vehicles near the stable area.
This trail network explores rock shelters, overhangs, and narrow canyons carved into the sandstone. It is a good pick for RV families wanting a shorter, scenic hike close to the campground.
Camper was clean and no problems at all. Really enjoyed our trip.

Carter Caves State Park, KY, United States
The park sits just off Interstate 64 at Exit 161, about 10 minutes from Olive Hill, Kentucky. It is roughly a 2-hour drive east of Lexington, about 1.5 hours west of Huntington, West Virginia, and about 2.5 hours southeast of Cincinnati. RV drivers should stay on I-64 and the main state routes into the park, as some secondary county roads through the surrounding hills are narrow, winding, and steep with tight turns. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Huntington Tri-State (HTS) and Lexington Blue Grass (LEX).
