Best time to visit Cattail Cove State Park

October through April is the prime window for RV travel, with comfortable daytime highs in the 60s to 80s Fahrenheit and cool nights that suit desert camping. Winter and early spring draw snowbirds, so reservations fill quickly on weekends and holidays. Late spring shoulder months like May can still be pleasant but warm up fast. Summer months of June through August bring extreme heat often exceeding 110 F, making shaded sites, strong air conditioning, and water recreation essential.

Things to do at Cattail Cove State Park

  • Swim Beach and Day-Use Area Easy
    RV parking available

The sandy swim beach at the cove is the park's signature attraction, with buoy-protected swim lanes, shaded ramadas, and picnic tables steps from the shoreline. Paved parking and short walking paths make it easy to access from the campground loops.

  • Whytes Retreat Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

This out-and-back desert footpath leaves the campground and follows the shoreline past coves and saguaro-studded hillsides toward a secluded beach. It is the main hiking option inside the park and offers constant lake views.

  • Boat Ramp and Lake Havasu Boating
    RV parking available

A paved, multi-lane boat ramp with a courtesy dock provides direct access to Lake Havasu for powerboats, personal watercraft, and pontoons. The ramp has a large paved lot that can accommodate tow vehicles and trailers.

  • Fishing on Lake Havasu Easy

Anglers target largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, channel catfish, and bluegill from shore or boat. An Arizona fishing license is required, and the cove offers calm water that is friendly to kayak and float-tube anglers.

  • Kayaking and Paddleboarding Easy
    RV parking available

The sheltered cove is a popular launch for kayaks and paddleboards exploring the shoreline north toward Lake Havasu State Park or south into quiet desert inlets. Calm mornings before the afternoon wind are best for paddlers.

  • Boat-In Shoreline Campsites Moderate

A series of primitive boat-access campsites stretch along the Arizona shore north of the main park. They can be used as day-stop destinations from the Cattail Cove ramp and offer a taste of the BLM-managed shoreline sites nearby.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The lake shoreline, desert washes, and cattail marshes attract great blue herons, egrets, grebes, desert bighorn sheep, roadrunners, and migrating waterfowl. Early morning around the cove and along the Whytes Retreat Trail is best for sightings.

Jim was great, he delivered our trailer to Echo Lodge Campground on time, everything was set up, AC running, fridge was cold upon our arrival. He called me prior to us arriving and after we arrived to make sure everything was in proper working order. Trailer was roomy and clean, everything worked as it should. It was stocked with basic necessities such as plastic cups, silverware, k-cup coffee, soap, sponges and it had some bowls and plates. There was a couple pots and pans, kitchen utensils, etc. My only recommendation would be to have some extra toilet paper and cleaning supplies to keep it clean for a 7 day trip. The queen bed was very comfortable, and AC was cold. The two bunk beds were good, maybe bring a mattress topper or foam pad. The couch makes into a small bed life a child or small adult. The outdoor fridge was great, he included some extra chairs and and outdoor rug. Would definitely recommend for any family for a great time!
