Late spring through early fall is the most popular window, with May, June, and September offering warm days, active fishing, and full campground services. Midsummer brings peak boating and sailing conditions but also heat, thunderstorms, and the largest crowds on holiday weekends. Shoulder months like April and October are quieter and pleasant for RV travel, though spring storms and fall cold fronts are possible. Winter camping is possible at limited utility sites, but expect cold winds, occasional snow, and reduced services.

Cheney Reservoir is widely regarded as one of the premier sailing lakes in the central United States, thanks to consistent prairie winds and open water. The Ninnescah Sailing Association operates from the reservoir and hosts regattas throughout the summer. Boat ramps near the marina provide ample RV and trailer parking.
Cheney Reservoir is one of Kansas's top fisheries for walleye, white bass, wipers, and channel catfish. Shoreline access, jetties, and boat ramps are spread around the lake, and a Kansas fishing license is required. Several fishing access points offer pull-through parking suitable for tow vehicles.
Cheney offers designated swim beaches with sandy shorelines for cooling off during hot Kansas summers. Swim areas are unguarded, so families should supervise children closely. Nearby day-use lots accommodate larger vehicles.
The park features multi-use trails that wind through native prairie, woodlands, and along the lakeshore. Routes are mostly flat with short rolling sections, suitable for walkers, runners, and mountain bikers of all skill levels. Trailheads have space for larger tow vehicles.
The adjacent Cheney Wildlife Area draws waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors, especially during spring and fall migration. Pelicans, bald eagles, and a wide variety of ducks are commonly seen. Pullouts along the shoreline offer scenic stops with room to park.
Multiple picnic shelters and day-use areas sit along the shoreline with views of the reservoir. Shelters include tables, grills, and nearby restrooms. Parking is generous and accommodates RVs and trailers.
Motorboating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing are all popular on Cheney Reservoir's open water. Multiple public boat ramps and a full-service marina provide launch access, fuel, and supplies. Ramp lots accommodate RVs towing trailers.

Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) is the closest major airport for travelers flying in and picking up an RV rental.
