Late June through early September offers the driest, calmest weather for crossing to the island and the warmest days for beach time, clamming, and kayaking. July and August are peak season, so mainland and Orcas Island RV campgrounds book early. May, early June, and September are good shoulder-season windows with fewer visitors, though boaters should watch for stronger winds and cooler water. Winter trips are possible but weather windows are short and seas are often rough.
Cool and wet; rough seas common, crossings often not advisable.
Still wintry; limited daylight for paddling.
Transitional weather; wind events frequent.
Milder days, cold water; dress for immersion.
Good shoulder season; reserve mainland RV sites early.
Start of peak season; long daylight hours.
Peak season; island campsites fill early.
Warmest, driest month; best for crossings.
Quieter shoulder season; watch for early fall storms.
Rainier and windier; crossings weather dependent.
Frequent storms; island use very limited.
Cold, wet, and short days; most visitors avoid winter crossings.
Clark Island has 15 campsites, 9 buoys for moorage, 2 picnic areas, a sandy beach, and opportunities for clamming, crabbing, and fishing. Sites are primitive and first-come, first-served, so plan arrival early on summer weekends. nps.gov/places/clark-island-marine-state-park.htm
Clark Island is a classic destination along the Cascadia Marine Trail for experienced paddlers crossing from Orcas or Lummi. Strong tidal currents and ship traffic demand trip planning, VHF radio, and immersion gear.
The island has a sandy beach and 2 picnic areas that make it an easy day stop for boaters. Sheltered coves on the east and west sides give options depending on wind direction.
Clark Island offers opportunities for clamming, crabbing, and fishing along its shoreline. Visitors must carry a current Washington shellfish or fishing license and check seasonal closures before harvesting. nps.gov/places/clark-island-marine-state-park.htm
The waters around Clark Island are part of the Salish Sea and host seals, porpoises, bald eagles, and occasional orcas. Bring binoculars and keep the required distance from marine mammals.
Many RV travelers base at an Orcas Island campground and launch small boats or charter from the east side of Orcas to reach Clark. This keeps the RV on paved roads and ferries while still allowing a full island experience.
Sucia Island Marine State Park is widely considered the crown jewel of Washington's marine state parks, with 814 acres and ten miles of hiking trails accessible only by watercraft, plus two docks and 48 buoys for anchorage. Pairing Clark with Sucia, Matia, or Patos makes for a strong multi-day San Juans itinerary.
We had a fantastic experience renting an RV from David at RV Easy. From start to finish, the process was smooth, professional, and stress-free. The delivery was right on time, and David took the time to thoroughly walk us through the trailer, explaining how everything worked and reviewing any pre-existing wear or damage. Throughout our trip, he was quick to respond to any questions we had and even came out promptly to help us with an issue we couldn't figure out ourselves. The pickup process was just as easy and hassle-free as the delivery. David was professional, knowledgeable, and clearly takes pride in providing excellent customer service. We felt completely confident both in his abilities and in the quality of the trailer we rented. I would highly recommend David to anyone considering an RV rental. We will definitely be renting from him again in the future!

david was a great host, very responsive with messages and flexible with pick up when our plans shifted. It was our first family camping trip with the kids and we had a wonderful weekend with the trailer. The kids loved the bunk beds!

Clark Island Marine State Park, WA, United States
RV travelers cannot drive to Clark Island; access is by private boat, kayak, or charter. Common staging points include Bellingham (about 20 miles southeast by water) and the Washington State Ferries terminal at Anacortes, roughly 80 miles north of Seattle by road, with onward ferry service to Orcas Island where small-boat launches sit closest to Clark. Drivers towing trailers on I-5 and SR-20 should plan for the Deception Pass Bridge height and narrow shoulders, and verify Washington State Ferries vehicle length limits before booking. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Bellingham International Airport, with Seattle-Tacoma International as a larger alternative.
