Spring (March through May) and fall (late September through early November) are the best times for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and active fishing and wildflower viewing. Summer brings hot, humid weather often above 90 F and is the busiest season for swimming, boating, and weekend camping, so reservations are strongly recommended. Winter is mild but can bring cold snaps and occasional freezing rain, with quieter campgrounds and good crappie fishing. Shoulder seasons are ideal for RVers who want full hookups without summer crowds.

Jim Chapman Lake (Cooper Lake) is a popular Texas reservoir for largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish. RVers can fish from lighted piers, boat ramps, or the shoreline at both park units.
Coyote Run is an easy interpretive nature loop in the South Sulphur Unit that winds through Post Oak woodland and meadow habitat. The trailhead has paved parking suitable for tow vehicles.
The Buggy Whip Trail is a multi-use trail open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians on the South Sulphur side. It offers several miles of rolling prairie and woodland riding with a dedicated equestrian trailhead and parking.
These short trails on the Doctors Creek Unit explore lakeshore woodlands and wetland edges with chances to spot herons, deer, and waterfowl. Trailhead parking accommodates standard tow vehicles.
Both units offer designated swim beaches and day-use picnic areas with shaded tables and lake access. Paved parking near the beaches makes it easy to spend the day without moving the RV.
Multi-lane boat ramps at both units provide access to open water for motorboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Larger trailer parking is available near the ramps for vehicles towing boats.
Cooper Lake sits along migratory flyways and supports bald eagles in winter, plus herons, egrets, ducks, and songbirds year-round. Open shoreline and prairie areas in the park make for productive viewing close to camp.

Cooper Lake State Park, TX, United States
The South Sulphur Unit is about 8 miles south of Cooper and roughly 75 miles (about 1.5 hours) northeast of Dallas via I-30 and FM 71 or SH 19. The Doctors Creek Unit is about 2 miles south of Cooper on FM 1529, on the north side of the lake, and the two units are not connected by a park road, requiring roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive between them. Roads to both units are paved and generally easy for big rigs, with no significant grades, tunnels, or weight-restricted bridges, though some county approach roads are narrow rural two-lanes. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW), about 90 miles southwest.
