Best time to visit Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Spring and fall, roughly April through May and September through October, offer the most comfortable RV weather with mild days, cool nights, and lower wildfire risk. The climate in the area ranges from extremely cold in the winter to temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months, so summer visitors should plan dune activities for early morning or evening. Winter brings freezing nights and occasional snow, but the park road and campground typically remain open year-round. Weekends and holidays are busiest with OHV riders, so midweek arrivals improve site availability.

Things to do at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

  • OHV and ATV riding on the dunes Moderate
    RV parking available

Off-highway vehicle riding is the park's signature activity on the open sand. Coral Pink Sand Dunes sits about 20 miles west of Kanab, and enthusiasts can travel over 1,500 acres of open sand covering the state park and the northern end of BLM's Moquith Mountain Wilderness Study Area. A designated non-motorized area protects habitat for the rare tiger beetle. blm.gov/visit/coral-pink-sand-dunes

  • Sandboarding and sand sledding Easy
    RV parking available

Visitors can rent boards or sleds locally and slide down the coral-pink dunes. The softer, cooler mornings and late afternoons are best for riding. No permit is required for non-motorized sand play in the designated areas.

  • Sand Dunes boardwalk and viewpoint Easy
    RV parking available

A short accessible boardwalk from the day-use area leads to an overlook of the dunes. It is a good leg-stretch for RV travelers and offers photo opportunities of the pink sand against red cliffs.

  • South Fork Indian Canyon Pictographs hike Moderate

This nearby BLM trail leads to Ancestral Puebloan rock art panels in a sandstone alcove. The route crosses sandy washes and is best in cooler months. Access is via rough roads, so scout conditions before towing.

  • Moquith Mountain Wilderness Study Area exploration Moderate

Hikers can explore canyons and ponderosa stands on the edge of the dunes. The eastern edge of Moquith Mountain is a series of deep canyons where Ponderosa pine and pinyon-juniper woodlands thrive, with hanging gardens and a stunning array of plant life such as cottonwood, cliff rose, oaks and maples in the spring-fed upper reaches. blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/utah/moquith-mountain-wsa

  • Stargazing Easy
    RV parking available

The park's remote location and low light pollution produce exceptional night skies. Summer offers warm evenings for viewing the Milky Way, while winter brings crisp, clear conditions. RV sites at the state park campground provide a convenient base.

  • Wildlife and tiger beetle viewing Easy
    RV parking available

The park is the only known home of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes tiger beetle, active on the dunes in warmer months. Stay on designated paths in the conservation area to protect habitat. Binoculars help for spotting mule deer and lizards at dawn and dusk.

  • Day trips to Zion and Bryce Canyon Easy
    RV parking available

The park makes a quieter RV basecamp for visiting Zion (about 1.5 hours) and Bryce Canyon (about 2 hours). Roads to both are paved and RV-friendly, though Zion's Mount Carmel Tunnel requires an escort fee for larger rigs. Returning to the dunes avoids peak national park crowds.

Super Convenient and helpful had a great stay

Philip R. - Nov 2025

Morgan was AMAZING! For a small fee the trailer was delivered to our site and completley set up with AC and the refrigerator was turned on prior to us arriving. Morgan was communicative through out the entire time from scheduling to pickup. About the trailer: Let me start off by saying the pictures DO NOT do this trailer justice! The interior is beautiful and MUCH larger than the pictures look. I am 6'3" and could stand up comfortably in every room which is usually not the case in any trailer I have ever been in. The rear toy hauler section was enormous and had 2 very large and comfortable beds. The master suite bed was extremely comfortable and the linens were clean and very comfortable. The couch reclines and has heated and vibrating seats. The freezer and refrigerator were what I would expect in a small apartment, accomidating lare caserol trays and several large bags of ice in the freezer. The kitchen is open with lots of counterspace cutting boards, utensils even some spices and tinfoil. The exterior kitchenette had a small refrigerator as well that was perfect for a few drinks and snacks while we hung outside with family under the two built in awnings. The full bath in the front is LARGE for a trailer and the shower was large enough to take a comfortable shower without having to touch the sides with an adult sized toilet, sink and mirror. Two people could comfortably occupy the restroom at the same time. AND there was a second half bath in the rear toyhauler space. I genuinely can't say enough good things about the accommodations and Morgan as the host.

How to get to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

The park sits about 20 miles west of Kanab, Utah, a drive of roughly 30 to 40 minutes. From Kanab, take Highway 89 north for 10 miles to Hancock Road, a designated Scenic Backway, then follow Hancock Road seven miles to a T at Yellowjacket Road and turn left (south). St. George is about 90 miles west (around two hours), Las Vegas is roughly 200 miles southwest (3.5 to 4 hours), and Salt Lake City is about 300 miles north (5 to 6 hours). RV drivers should watch for steep grades and sharp curves on Highway 89 through Kanab Creek country, strong crosswinds on open stretches, and the final miles on Hancock and Yellowjacket roads, which are paved but narrow with limited shoulders. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent is Harry Reid International in Las Vegas, with St. George Regional as a smaller alternative.
