Late spring through early fall is the prime window for RV travel, with May, June, and September offering warm days, cooler nights, and smaller crowds than peak summer. July and August bring reliable sun and the best swimming and boating conditions, though daytime highs often climb into the 90s Fahrenheit and shade is limited. Shoulder-season visitors should watch for strong Columbia Gorge winds, which can affect awnings and high-profile rigs. Winter visits are limited, as the park typically operates on a reduced seasonal schedule with many services closed from roughly October through March.

The park has a sandy swimming beach along a protected cove of the Columbia River. Calm shallow water makes it a popular family stop on hot summer afternoons.
A paved boat launch and small marina provide direct access to the John Day pool of the Columbia. Anglers target smallmouth bass, walleye, and seasonal salmon and steelhead runs.
A short but steep trail climbs the park's namesake butte for sweeping views of the Columbia River, the Oregon shoreline, and the surrounding Horse Heaven Hills. The route is exposed with little shade, so early morning is best in summer.
Reliable afternoon winds funneling through the Columbia corridor make this stretch of river popular with windsurfers and kiteboarders. Launch directly from the park shoreline during summer.
Wetland edges and river backwaters attract waterfowl, herons, raptors, and migrating songbirds. Spring and fall migrations are especially productive.
Shaded lawns, picnic tables, and restrooms make the day-use area a comfortable base for groups. It is a convenient stop for RVers traveling SR-14 along the Columbia.
The park's rural location well away from major cities provides dark skies on clear nights. Bring a blanket to the riverfront or open lawn areas for summer stargazing.

Crow Butte State Park, WA, United States
The park sits just off Washington State Route 14 between Plymouth and Paterson, in Benton County. From the Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland), it is roughly a 45 to 60 minute drive southwest via I-82 and SR-14, and from Hermiston, Oregon it is about a 45 minute drive across the Umatilla bridge. SR-14 is a two-lane highway with some rolling grades and crosswinds through the Columbia River corridor, so RV drivers should watch for gusts and slow-moving farm traffic. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Tri-Cities Airport (PSC) in Pasco.
