Lone Tree Campground sits within the rugged expanse of Cottonwood Canyon State Park in north-central Oregon, where the John Day River has carved a dramatic landscape of vertical cliffs, deep canyons, and arid grasslands spanning more than 8,000 acres. The campground offers 21 primitive sites accommodating RVs up to 75 feet, making it a genuine big-rig-friendly destination in an otherwise remote setting, along with 14 walk-in tent sites for those arriving on foot. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with restrooms featuring flush toilets available nearby. The park holds rare International Dark Sky Park certification, offering exceptional stargazing far from city light pollution. Hikers can explore the Pinnacles Trail and Lost Corral Trail, each stretching 4.3 miles through striking canyon terrain. The John Day River provides excellent fishing for wild steelhead, catfish, and smallmouth bass, as well as opportunities for rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot elk, mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and numerous raptors. Spring brings vivid wildflower blooms across the canyon slopes. Located in Oregon's Gilliam and Wheeler counties, the park sits in a truly remote area with no cell coverage, offering a genuine off-grid escape in the Pacific Northwest.
