Late May through September is the most comfortable window, with warm, dry days, open trails, and reliable access on US 97. July and August bring the hottest afternoons and the busiest weekends, so midweek stays are easier for larger rigs. Shoulder months, April to mid May and October, offer wildflowers or fall color with cooler nights and fewer campers. Winter camping is possible but expect snow, freezing overnight temperatures, and the need for cold-weather RV prep.
Snow common; winter camping with cold-weather RV prep
Freezing nights; icy roads possible on US 97
Mud and lingering snow at elevation
Wildflowers begin; variable weather
Pleasant days, cool nights
Great hiking weather
Peak season; book early
Hot, dry; fire restrictions common
Ideal shoulder-season conditions
Fall color, frosty nights
Rain and early snow possible
Winter conditions; Satus Pass may require chains
Brooks Memorial maintains several miles of hiking trails that loop through ponderosa pine and oak forest along the Little Klickitat River. Trailheads begin inside the park, so RV campers can walk from their site without moving the rig.
Goldendale Observatory State Park is a public astronomy center about 20 miles south of Brooks Memorial, featuring one of the largest public telescopes in the United States. Evening programs are popular in summer and the site has RV-friendly parking at the hilltop lot.
Maryhill Museum of Art and the full-scale Stonehenge replica sit on bluffs above the Columbia River about 35 miles south of the park. The drive down US 97 is scenic, and both sites have large paved lots suitable for trucks and trailers.
The Columbia River Gorge begins roughly 30 to 40 minutes south of Brooks Memorial, offering waterfalls, windsurfing beaches, and scenic drives on both the Washington and Oregon sides. Day trips from the park are easy via US 97 and Washington State Route 14.
The Klickitat Trail is a rails-to-trails corridor that follows the Wild and Scenic Klickitat River between Lyle and the Goldendale area. Hikers and cyclists can access sections at Lyle and other trailheads within an hour of the park for wildflower walks and river views.
The park's mixed pine-oak woodlands host deer, wild turkeys, woodpeckers, and seasonal songbirds. Early morning walks along the campground roads and the river corridor are the easiest way to spot them from camp.
The Little Klickitat River flows through the park and offers small-stream fishing opportunities in season. A current Washington fishing license and review of state regulations are required before casting.

Brooks Memorial State Park, WA, United States
The park sits directly on US Highway 97 about 13 miles north of Goldendale, roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour drive from Portland, Oregon via I-84 and US 97, and about 1.5 hours from Yakima, Washington heading south on US 97. RV drivers should plan for the climb over Satus Pass just north of the park, a long grade that can be slow in hot weather or slick in winter snow and ice. There are no low tunnels on this route, but traction tires or chains may be required on US 97 in winter. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Portland International (PDX) about 110 miles southwest and Yakima Air Terminal about 65 miles north.
