Best time to visit Cutts Island State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, is the most comfortable window for visiting Cutts Island, with drier weather, calmer waters in Carr Inlet, and warmer paddling conditions. July and August bring the most reliable sunshine but also the busiest boat traffic around Kopachuck and Henderson Bay. Shoulder months of April, May, and September offer quieter anchorages and open RV sites at nearby mainland parks. Winter paddling is possible but cold, wet, and best left to experienced boaters.

Things to do at Cutts Island State Park

  • Paddle from Kopachuck State Park Moderate
    RV parking available

The most common way to reach Cutts Island is a short kayak or canoe paddle from the beach at Kopachuck State Park on the mainland. The crossing covers a protected stretch of Carr Inlet that is suitable for intermediate paddlers when conditions are calm.

  • Beachcombing the Sand Spit Easy

Cutts Island features a sandy spit at its northern end that is exposed at lower tides and popular for beachcombing and picnicking. Visitors often spot shorebirds, driftwood, and tidepool life along the shoreline.

  • Mooring and Day Anchoring Moderate

Mooring buoys on the lee side of Cutts Island allow small boats to tie up for the day or overnight. Facilities are primitive with no water or shore power, so boaters should arrive self-sufficient.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy

The island's forested bluffs and surrounding waters support bald eagles, great blue herons, harbor seals, and a variety of seabirds. Quiet paddlers often see wildlife along the eroding shoreline and madrona groves.

  • Shellfish Harvesting Easy

Seasonal clam and oyster harvesting is allowed on designated public tidelands around Cutts Island when open by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Harvesters must check current season dates, licenses, and biotoxin advisories before collecting.

  • Base Camp at Kopachuck State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Kopachuck State Park on the mainland serves as the natural staging point for Cutts Island trips, with picnic areas, restrooms, and shoreline access across Carr Inlet. RV travelers can park there for the day while using small boats to reach the island.

  • Photography of Henderson Bay Easy

The waters around Cutts Island offer panoramic views across Henderson Bay and Carr Inlet toward the Key Peninsula and, on clear days, the Olympic Mountains. Sunset light on the madrona trees and sandstone bluffs is a popular subject for photographers.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

How to get to Cutts Island State Park

RV travelers reach the launch area from Tacoma in about 30 minutes via State Route 16 and Gig Harbor, from Seattle in roughly 1.5 hours, and from Olympia in about 45 minutes. The standard approach is to drive to Kopachuck State Park west of Gig Harbor and launch a kayak, canoe, or small boat across a short stretch of Carr Inlet to the island. The access roads into Kopachuck are narrow and wooded with tight turns, so large Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should scout parking before committing. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), about an hour away.
