Late spring through early fall offers the most comfortable conditions, with May, June, September, and October combining warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity. July and August are the busiest months thanks to the swim beach and lake activities, so reservations fill quickly on weekends. Shoulder seasons bring fall color on the surrounding ridges and uncrowded trails, though overnight temperatures can drop sharply. Winter is quiet and some facilities operate on reduced schedules, but the campground generally remains accessible for self-contained RVs.

Fairy stone hunting is the park's signature activity, centered on a designated search area where visitors can look for the natural cross-shaped staurolite crystals. The search site has trailhead parking and is a short, easy walk from the lot.
The sandy swim beach on the 168-acre Fairy Stone Lake is a seasonal draw for families, open during summer months with lifeguards on duty. A paved day-use parking area near the beach accommodates larger vehicles.
Fairy Stone Lake offers flat-water paddling for kayaks, canoes, and small boats, with rentals available seasonally at the boathouse. Gas motors are restricted, keeping the lake quiet for fishing and wildlife viewing.
The Stuart's Knob trails climb through hardwood forest to ridge overlooks above the lake and pass remnants of historic iron mines. Expect rocky sections and moderate elevation change on the upper loops.
Fairy Stone has a network of shared-use trails that are popular with mountain bikers, with rolling singletrack and forest roads suitable for intermediate riders. Trailhead parking at the day-use area handles trucks and tow vehicles.
Fishing is a year-round activity on Fairy Stone Lake, which holds largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. A valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for anglers of age.
The Lakeshore Trail is a relatively gentle path that skirts portions of Fairy Stone Lake, offering water views and connections to the beach and picnic areas. It is a good option for shorter walks with kids or dogs on leash.
The Rv was exactly what we needed and the owner (Jonathan) was an incredible help. Jonathan takes great care of this RV and anyone who rents it will be pleased. But please treat the RV well, because I plan on renting again in the future!!

Fairy Stone State Park, VA, United States
The park sits off Virginia Route 57 in Patrick County, about 20 miles northwest of Martinsville and roughly 50 miles south of Roanoke, a drive of about an hour from Roanoke and under three hours from Greensboro, North Carolina. Access roads wind through the Blue Ridge foothills with rolling grades and a few tight curves, so larger rigs should plan a daylight arrival and avoid shortcuts on unpaved county roads. There are no major tunnels or weight-restricted routes on the main approach via US 220 and Route 57, but mountain weather can bring fog and icy patches in winter. The closest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA), with Piedmont Triad International (GSO) in Greensboro as a larger alternative.
