Late spring and early fall, roughly April through June and September through October, are the most comfortable months, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer biting insects. July and August bring peak beach crowds, hot and humid weather, and the highest chance of Atlantic storms, so campsites book well in advance. Winter is mild but damp, and the campground typically closes from early December through early March, making the shoulder seasons ideal for RV travel.

The Bald Cypress Trail is a short interpretive loop through cypress swamps and maritime forest near the park's Trail Center. Boardwalks cross dark tannin-stained waters where Spanish moss drapes from trees, a rare sight this far north.
The Cape Henry Trail is a six-mile multi-use path that bisects the park between the Chesapeake Bay entrance and 64th Street near the Atlantic. It is open to hikers and cyclists and connects campgrounds, the Trail Center, and Virginia Beach's city bike network.
The park features 1.5 miles of shoreline along the Chesapeake Bay, with a sandy swimming beach accessible from the campground. The calm bay water is a gentler alternative to the Atlantic surf just minutes away.
The Narrows is a sheltered tidal waterway popular for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. It is rumored that Blackbeard once hid in this area of the park. A launch and boat trailer parking are available on-site.
The Osmanthus Trail winds through cypress swamp and hardwood forest in a quieter section of the park. The route links with the Bald Cypress and High Dune trails for longer loops and showcases the park's signature coastal ecosystems.
The Trail Center offers exhibits on the park's ecology, human history, and Civilian Conservation Corps origins. The park was built by an all-Black Civilian Conservation Corps crew during the New Deal era and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Anglers can fish from the shoreline or launch small boats from the park's boat ramp on Broad Bay. Common catches include flounder, speckled trout, and croaker, with boat trailer parking available near the launch.
The historic Cape Henry Lighthouse stands just outside the park on adjacent Fort Story property and is a short drive from the campground. The site marks the area where English colonists first landed before continuing to Jamestown.
Taylor was a great host and had an awesome RV. They provided a detailed overview of the RV when we picked it up and had us on the road on the family trip! The RV size and layout was perfect for our family of 5, with the bunkroom being a nice space for the kids own room. The kitchen had everything we needed and they had the small touches that made a huge difference (bag of charcoal). Thank you for a great trip!

Nicholas was wonderful to work with. We felt very comfortable with his instructions. Definitely recommend him for your future camping adventures!!
Karen W. - Nov 2024
Nicholas was excellent with communication. He gladly answered all my questions without hesitation. The camper REALLY has all you would need for camping, including hand soap, dish soap and body wash. He hooked it all up for us so when we got there all we had to do was unpack. There were 5 of us and I thought we would fit without issue, however, it was tight. But we did not spend much time in there so it was ok. I would (and likely will) definitely rent from Nicholas again. We had a great time.

First Landing State Park, VA, United States
The park sits on Shore Drive (US-60) in Virginia Beach, about 20 minutes from downtown Norfolk, under an hour from Williamsburg, and roughly 3.5 hours southeast of Washington, D.C. Drivers approaching from the Eastern Shore should note the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has vehicle size and hazardous materials restrictions that apply to large RVs, so confirm current limits before crossing. Shore Drive itself is low-lying and can flood during coastal storms and nor'easters. Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about 20 miles from the park.
