October through April is generally the most comfortable time to visit, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer mosquitoes. Spring, especially March and April, brings wildflowers and active birdlife, while fall offers pleasant camping weather after hurricane season winds down. Summer months are hot, humid, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms, though the lakefront beach is a popular draw. Shoulder seasons are ideal for RVers who want cooler nights and easier campground availability.

A sandy swimming beach on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain is the park's signature feature. RVers can park nearby in the day-use area and enjoy shallow water, picnic tables, and shaded pavilions.
The 31-mile paved Tammany Trace passes directly through the park, connecting Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell. It is open to cyclists, walkers, and inline skaters, with a trailhead accessible from the park.
The brick ruins of the 1829 sugar mill built by Mandeville founder Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville sit within the park. Interpretive signage explains the site's plantation-era history and construction.
A short nature trail and marsh boardwalk lead through pine flatwoods and wetlands along Bayou Cane. The route is ideal for spotting wading birds, turtles, and the occasional alligator.
Fontainebleau is a designated stop on the America's Wetland Birding Trail, with habitat supporting herons, egrets, osprey, and migratory songbirds. Spring and fall migrations are particularly productive.
Anglers fish from the lakeshore and the park pier for redfish, speckled trout, and catfish, while blue crabs are a popular catch in warmer months. A Louisiana fishing license is required for those 16 and older.
Shaded picnic areas and group pavilions under moss-draped live oaks make the park a popular day-use destination. Grills and restrooms are available near the beach area.

The title “Happy Glamping” is a perfect title! This truly made our trip perfect! The unit was perfect size and so clean. Had more than we needed but was great to know it was available had we needed it. Working with Mr. David and his wife was very pleasant! Will definitely rent again!

Fontainebleau State Park, LA, United States
The park sits along US Highway 190 just east of Mandeville, Louisiana, about a 10 minute drive from downtown Mandeville and roughly 45 miles (about an hour) north of New Orleans via the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. Baton Rouge is approximately 80 miles west, about a 90 minute drive via I-12. RV drivers should note that the Causeway has vehicle height and weight restrictions, so larger rigs may prefer the I-10 and I-55 or I-59 routes around the lake. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY), roughly an hour away.
