Spring through early summer (April to June) and fall (September to October) bring the most comfortable temperatures and lower humidity for RV travel, with trails and riverfront at their best. Summer is warm and humid, with peak visitation at the campground and on the Ohio River. Each October the park puts on the Fort Massac Encampment, a multi-day event in which visitors can see and interact with period performers, making mid-fall a popular time to reserve a site. Winter visits are quieter, with mild daytime highs possible but occasional snow and ice.

Fort Massac State Park, IL, United States
The park is located just off Interstate 24 at Metropolis, Illinois, at the southern tip of the state on the Ohio River. Paducah, Kentucky is about a 15 to 20 minute drive south across the river, Carbondale, Illinois is roughly 75 minutes north, and St. Louis is about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive northwest. RV drivers should note the Brookport Bridge over the Ohio River has posted weight and lane restrictions, so large rigs should approach via I-24 and the US-45 interchange instead. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Barkley Regional Airport in Paducah, with larger options in Nashville and St. Louis.
