The best months to visit are October through April, when daytime highs are comfortable for hiking and desert temperatures are manageable for RV travel. Late fall and early spring offer clear skies, cool nights, and lower chances of monsoon storms, making them ideal shoulder seasons for campers. Summer brings triple-digit heat and strong sun that can strain RV cooling and batteries, plus afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. Spring wildflowers typically peak in March and April following winter rains.

Aztec Cave Trail is a short, steep out-and-back hike leading to a pair of shallow caves carved into the mountain face. The route climbs quickly with loose rock and desert exposure, offering big views of El Paso from the cave alcove. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/franklin-mountains
North Franklin Peak Trail is a strenuous full-day hike to the highest point in El Paso County at roughly 7,192 feet. The long out-and-back route gains significant elevation and offers panoramic summit views across Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/franklin-mountains
The Ron Coleman Trail crosses the Franklin Mountains from Smuggler's Pass and links to Transmountain Road, offering some of the park's most scenic ridgeline views. Expect exposed rock, rugged footing, and long desert sightlines toward both sides of the range. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/franklin-mountains
Franklin Mountains State Park has miles of shared-use singletrack and doubletrack open to mountain bikers. Trails wind through Chihuahuan Desert terrain with rocky climbs, technical descents, and connections from Tom Mays Unit trailheads. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/franklin-mountains
The park offers rock climbing and bouldering at areas such as Sneed's Cory and other crags within the Franklin range. Climbers find bolted sport routes and traditional lines on desert rock, best attempted in cooler months. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/franklin-mountains
The park hosts a diverse range of Chihuahuan Desert wildlife, including mule deer, javelina, roadrunners, and numerous raptors. Early morning and dusk from pullouts along Transmountain Road are prime observation times. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/franklin-mountains
Designated overlooks along Transmountain Road provide expansive sunset vistas across El Paso and into New Mexico and Mexico. The higher elevations reduce some city light glare and make for memorable evening photography from RV-friendly pullouts. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/franklin-mountains
This was a last minute trip that many other RV owners declined. Roberto was available and willing. I have no complaints or negative things to say about any of my experience renting from him and his family. They were absolutely wonderful to work with. Communication was great, very fair owners, and they are just great people overall. Also, everything in the RV was clean and in order. The master bed is super comfy! Would recommend and would rent again.

Franklin Mountains State Park, TX, United States
The park sits within the city of El Paso, Texas, with the Tom Mays Unit entrance off Loop 375 (Transmountain Road) on the west side of the range. El Paso International Airport is about 15 to 20 minutes from the park, making it convenient for fly-and-rent RV trips. Las Cruces, New Mexico is roughly 45 miles north via I-10, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park is about 110 miles east. RV drivers should note that Transmountain Road (Loop 375) is a steep, winding mountain pass with significant grades, so use low gears on descent, watch engine temperature on the climb, and be cautious of strong crosswinds common on the ridge.
