Late fall through early spring, roughly November through March, is the most comfortable window, with mild daytime temperatures and lower humidity ideal for long hikes to the dinosaur tracks. Wildflowers and mild weather make March and April a strong shoulder season. Summer visits are possible but heat, sun exposure, and limited shade on exposed trails can be intense, so early-morning starts are recommended. The park is typically open Friday through Monday, so RV trip plans should be timed to those operating days.

The dinosaur tracks in the backcountry are the natural area's signature attraction, exposed in a limestone creek bed. Reaching them requires a long round-trip hike on rugged trails, so plan a full day and carry plenty of water.
The Savanna Loop is a front-country route that winds through restored oak savanna and native grassland. It offers a gentler introduction to the landscape and is a good option for shorter visits.
The Joe Johnston Route follows a historic roadbed into the backcountry and serves as the main access corridor to longer trails. It is popular with hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers.
The backcountry features a network of multi-use trails open to mountain bikers. Rocky terrain and elevation changes reward riders with technical challenge and Hill Country scenery.
Government Canyon protects habitat for golden-cheeked warblers and other Hill Country wildlife. Spring mornings are the best time for birding along quieter trails.
Designated backcountry routes are open to horseback riding. Riders should confirm current trail access and bring their own stock, as the park has limited equestrian facilities.
Primitive walk-in campsites are available in the backcountry for visitors willing to pack in their gear. RV travelers typically base at commercial parks in San Antonio and hike in for an overnight.

We had a fantastic time camping with this camper. It was perfect for my family of 4 and really we could have had more. We will definitely be renting from Matt again. He was prompt with the setup and pick up and very easy to get ahold of. I highly recommend using them!

Kristen was a fantastic host. We arrived to everything set up and hooked up. The RV was clean and clean linens and towels were on the beds. The outdoor kitchen was perfect for breakfast and the outside fridge was used constantly. Communication was amazing. We had a flight cancelled and Kristen made it work so we didn't miss a thing.

Government Canyon State Natural Area, TX, United States
The natural area sits off Galm Road on the far northwest side of San Antonio, about a 30 to 45 minute drive from downtown San Antonio depending on traffic. From Austin, expect roughly a 90 to 120 minute drive south via I-35 and Loop 1604. RV drivers should note that final access is via two-lane rural roads with a low-water crossing approach and a modest parking area, so very large Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels may find maneuvering tight. San Antonio International Airport is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
