Best time to visit Grand Isle State Park

Spring, from March through May, is often the most comfortable time to visit, with warm days, lower humidity, and peak songbird migration along the barrier island. Fall, from October into early December, also offers pleasant temperatures, reduced crowds, and strong redfish and speckled trout runs for anglers. Summer is hot, humid, and busy with beachgoers, and it overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks in August and September. Winter is mild but can bring cool fronts and gusty onshore winds.

Things to do at Grand Isle State Park

  • Grand Isle Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Grand Isle State Park fronts a wide stretch of Gulf of Mexico beach within walking distance of the campground. Visitors swim, sunbathe, shell, and launch kayaks directly from the sand. Beach driving is not permitted inside the park.

  • Fishing Pier Easy
    RV parking available

The park's beachfront fishing pier is the centerpiece activity for most visitors. Anglers target speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and Spanish mackerel from the pier, with cleaning stations nearby. A Louisiana saltwater fishing license is required for adults.

  • Observation Tower and Lagoon Boardwalk Easy
    RV parking available

A wooden boardwalk crosses the back-dune lagoon to an elevated observation tower. The tower offers panoramic views of the Gulf, Barataria Pass, and Grand Terre Island across the water. It is a prime spot for birding and sunrise photos.

  • Birding the Barrier Island Easy
    RV parking available

Grand Isle is a well-known stopover on the Mississippi Flyway and draws migrating warblers, tanagers, and shorebirds each spring and fall. Brown pelicans, laughing gulls, and several tern species are common year round. Bring binoculars and insect repellent.

  • Surf Fishing and Crabbing Easy
    RV parking available

The park's beach and lagoons allow surf fishing and recreational crabbing with standard Louisiana saltwater regulations. Redfish, pompano, and blue crab are common catches close to shore. RV campers can walk to productive spots from beachfront sites.

  • Fort Livingston Viewpoint Easy
    RV parking available

Fort Livingston sits on the southwestern tip of Grand Terre Island, on the east side of Barataria Pass, across from Grand Isle. The 19th-century masonry fort is visible from the park and from charter boats, though the island is accessible only by boat from Grand Isle, Louisiana. The structure was severely damaged in a hurricane in 1915 and is managed by the Louisiana Office of State Parks. nps.gov/subjects/ncptt/upload/Ft-Livingston-508.pdf

  • Elmer's Island Wildlife Refuge Easy
    RV parking available

Elmer's Island, just west of Grand Isle, offers undeveloped beach, marsh, and surf fishing access managed by Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries. The refuge is popular for birding, beachcombing, and catching redfish along the Gulf shoreline. RV day-use parking is available at the entrance, but overnight camping is not allowed on the refuge.

How to get to Grand Isle State Park

The park lies at the southern end of Louisiana Highway 1, roughly 2 hours (about 108 miles) south of New Orleans and about 2.5 hours southeast of Baton Rouge. The route follows LA-1 across long, low coastal bridges, including the elevated Leeville Bridge, so RVers should watch for crosswinds, check for tropical weather, and confirm any height or weight posts before departure. Fuel, groceries, and dump services are limited past Golden Meadow, so it is wise to top off tanks in Galliano or Larose. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
