Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, United States
The park is located 20 miles southeast of Eureka via US Highway 101, then 17 miles east on California Highway 36. The final approach via Highway 36 is a winding mountain road with sharp curves, narrow sections, and grades up to 7 percent that slow larger RVs. Ongoing landslide remediation work on Highway 36 can cause delays of 15 to 30 minutes, so check current conditions before traveling. The nearest airport is Arcata-Eureka (ACV), approximately 40 miles northwest; from there, head south on US-101 then east on Highway 36 to reach the park.
Best time to visit is June through September, when temperatures range from 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit with minimal rainfall. Summer months offer ideal conditions for camping, hiking, and river activities, with water warm enough for swimming. Campground reservations book quickly between Labor Day and Memorial Day so advance planning is essential. May and October offer shoulder-season weather with mild temperatures and fewer crowds, though water conditions may be less ideal for swimming.

This easy 1.3-kilometer hike showcases ancient old-growth coast redwoods in a serene setting. The trail winds beneath towering redwoods that were spared and donated by a Georgia-Pacific lumber company executive. The trailhead is accessible about 4 miles from the visitor center via the main park road.
A calm pool near the campground offers summer swimming where Grizzly Creek meets the Van Duzen River. Water temperatures are comfortable from June through August, providing relief during warm days. Note that water currents are strong outside summer months and lifeguards are not present.
The Van Duzen River supports steelhead and salmon migrations during fall and winter months, making it a prime destination for sport fishing. Peak fishing runs occur from late September through early spring as these species move upstream to spawn. A valid California fishing license is required for all anglers age 16 and over.
The Van Duzen River offers kayaking and canoeing with Class III rapids best suited to winter and spring high water. Summer months bring calmer water conditions ideal for paddlers with less experience. Always check water levels and weather conditions before launching.
This 1.25-mile hike winds through inland redwood forest and features a summer-only footbridge crossing the Van Duzen River. Stairs aid navigation through steeper sections as the trail climbs through the park's drier forest ecosystem. The trailhead is accessed from the picnic area parking lot.
The visitor center features interpretive exhibits on redwood ecology, park history, and restoration efforts, plus a bookstore and weekend campfire programs during camping season. Displays explain the significance of old-growth redwoods and the Van Duzen River ecosystem. The center is located at the main park entrance and provides orientation for visitors new to the park.
