Spring, from March through May, is often considered the best time to visit, with mild temperatures ideal for boating, fishing, and hiking, and the possibility of seasonal waterfalls during high spring runoff. Fall, from September through early November, is another strong shoulder season with comfortable daytime highs and fewer crowds. Summer brings very hot desert temperatures frequently above 100 F, so RVers should plan for early-morning activity and adequate shade. Winter is mild but water activities slow down, and overnight lows can dip near freezing.

Gunlock Reservoir is the centerpiece of the park and is open to motorized boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, and paddling. A concrete boat ramp provides access on the east side, and the reservoir's warm water makes it a popular summer destination. Trailer parking accommodates RVs and tow vehicles.
Anglers target largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish from shore or boat. The reservoir is stocked and managed by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and a Utah fishing license is required. Shoreline access is easy from the day-use area.
During high spring runoff, the reservoir overflows its spillway and creates a temporary series of red-rock waterfalls below the dam. The waterfalls attract large crowds to the east side of the reservoir, and parking can fill quickly along Gunlock Drive. Check current conditions before planning a visit, as the falls do not flow every year. blm.gov/announcement/blm-seeks-public-comment-gunlock-state-park-west-access-road-proposal
The reservoir's sandy, gradually sloping shoreline is popular for swimming, floating, and paddleboarding in summer. There are no lifeguards on duty, so swimmers should use caution. Restrooms and a day-use area are available near the boat ramp.
The park offers primitive camping around the reservoir with no hookups and no assigned sites. RVers can stay overnight in the dirt lot and shoreline areas near the boat ramp. Self-contained rigs are best suited for this style of camping.
The park's mix of red rock, desert, and water attracts waterfowl, raptors, and desert wildlife, making it a strong spot for photography and birdwatching. Sunset light on the surrounding red cliffs is especially photogenic. Bring binoculars and a long lens for best results.
Snow Canyon State Park is about a 20 minute drive south and offers hiking, lava tubes, and Navajo sandstone scenery. It is an easy add-on for RVers basing at Gunlock who want more developed trails and facilities. Several trailheads in Snow Canyon have RV-friendly parking.
Loved our experience with Sandy from start to finish. He communicated very well, including letting us know about the need to reserve a campsite ahead of time. The camper was very well stocked with kitchen items. The beds were soft and well prepared. They met us when we arrived to set up the RV and explain everything. The weather was very cold and so the water froze one morning. Sandy came right over within minutes and helped us get it going again. Very nice people and very honest. There were extra things we had ordered that we didn’t need so he offered to takeoff those charges. We would absolutely come back and use them again. We were a family with small children and they even agreed that it felt like home. Thank you for a great experience!

Gunlock State Park, UT, United States
Gunlock State Park sits roughly 15 miles northwest of St. George, Utah, about a 25 to 30 minute drive via Old Highway 91 and Gunlock Road. From Las Vegas, Nevada, it is approximately 140 miles (a 2.5 hour drive) via Interstate 15, and from Salt Lake City it is about 305 miles (around 4.5 hours). The access road (Gunlock Drive) is paved but narrow with some curves along the Santa Clara River, so large Class A and fifth-wheel RVs should drive cautiously, watch for parking congestion on busy waterfall days, and avoid pulling off onto soft shoulders. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is St. George Regional Airport (SGU), with Harry Reid International in Las Vegas as the major hub alternative.
