Late May through early September is the most popular window, when the beach is guarded, the lake is warm for boating and paddling, and all campground loops are in full service. September and October bring cooler nights, fall color in the hardwood ridges, and noticeably fewer campers, which is ideal for RVers who want quiet weekends. Early spring can be wet and buggy, but weekdays in April and early May offer easy site selection. Winter visits are day-use oriented, since some facilities and loops may be closed or offer reduced services.

The 741-acre reservoir is the centerpiece of the park, open to boats with a no-horsepower-limit on the main pool outside posted idle zones. Anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish from the shoreline and from boats. Paved boat ramps and trailer parking make launches straightforward for RV travelers towing boats.
A designated swimming beach with seasonal lifeguards sits near the main day-use area. Shaded picnic spots and a bathhouse make it a practical stop for families between campground and lake. Parking near the beach accommodates tow vehicles from the campground.
Hardy Lake hosts an on-site raptor rehabilitation program with outdoor enclosures that display non-releasable hawks, owls, and eagles. Interpretive signs explain the birds' histories and the rehabilitation mission. The short, mostly level walkway is accessible for most visitors.
Several miles of hiking trails loop through hardwood forest and along the reservoir's shoreline coves. Trails are generally short and rated easy to moderate, with trailheads accessible from the main park roads. Tow-vehicle parking is easier than maneuvering a large RV to remote trailheads.
Hardy Lake is a productive spot for waterfowl, wading birds, and songbirds, especially during spring and fall migration. Bald eagles and osprey are seen near the dam and upper coves. Quiet mornings from the shoreline or a paddle craft give the best views.
The upper arms of Hardy Lake are ideal for kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards, with sheltered water and wildlife-rich shorelines. Car-top launch points near the campground keep paddling easy for RV travelers without a trailer. Wear a PFD and watch for powerboat traffic near the main pool.
Shaded picnic shelters with grills and tables are spread across the property, several with lake views. Shelter reservations are handled through the Indiana State Parks system. Most day-use lots have space for a tow vehicle, though largest RVs should stick to the main lots.
First time we've rented an RV and James took total care of us the whole way from beginning to the end. He explained everything in detail and answered all my questions. It was the best experience I could have imagined for being the first time. Would highly recommend and rent from him again.

Hardy Lake State Park, IN, United States
Hardy Lake sits just off Interstate 65 in southern Indiana, roughly 35 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky (about 45 minutes) and about 70 miles south of Indianapolis (around 90 minutes). Most RVers exit I-65 at Austin or Scottsburg and follow state roads a short distance east to the park entrance, which is a straightforward approach with no tunnels or steep mountain grades. Access roads inside the property are paved but narrow in places, so larger rigs should take wide turns near the campground and boat ramp. The closest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF) and Indianapolis International (IND).
