Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, offers the driest weather, longest daylight, and best conditions for hiking and beach walking. July and August are warmest and busiest, while June and September often deliver sunny days with fewer visitors. Winter months are green and mossy but bring frequent rain and muddy trails, so shoulder-season RV travel in April or October is a good balance for quieter exploration.

The park offers several miles of interconnected forest trails through tall Douglas fir, cedar, and mossy understory. Loops can be combined for a quiet woodland walk of one to three miles. Footing can be soft and rooty, especially after rain.
A short descent from the trail system leads to the saltwater shoreline on McLane Cove. At low tide, visitors can walk the gravel and sand beach to explore tide pools and look for shorebirds. Check tide charts before heading down.
Harstine Island's tidelands are a popular spot for clam digging and oyster gathering during open seasons. A Washington shellfish/seaweed license is required, and harvesters should check Department of Fish and Wildlife beach status before collecting. Bring buckets, gloves, and a measuring gauge.
The mix of mature forest, shoreline, and tidal flats attracts bald eagles, kingfishers, herons, and numerous shorebirds. Deer and small mammals are often seen along the trails. Early morning visits offer the best wildlife activity.
Quiet picnic spots are scattered near the trailhead and along the shoreline. The setting is more natural and undeveloped than at larger state parks, so pack in everything needed and pack out all waste. Picnic tables are limited.
Paddlers can launch from nearby boat ramps on Harstine Island to explore the sheltered waters of Case Inlet and the shoreline below the park. Conditions are generally calm in summer but winds can pick up quickly in the afternoon. Bring safety gear and check marine forecasts.
Jarrell Cove State Park, also on Harstine Island, offers standard and utility campsites suitable for RVs and a protected moorage area. Many visitors base their RV stay at Jarrell Cove and day-trip to Harstine Island State Park. Reservations are recommended in summer.
We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

Danielle is a great host! The trailer was wonderfully laid out and perfect for a family of four. It was very clean and everything worked perfectly! Our family had a great time and would definitely rent from Danielle again!

Harstine Island State Park, WA, United States
The park sits on the north end of Harstine Island, reached by the Harstine Island Bridge off State Route 3 near Shelton, about 20 minutes from Shelton and roughly 1.5 hours from Seattle or Tacoma via I-5 and SR 3. The access roads are narrow rural two-lane routes with tight turns near the bridge, so large motorhomes and long trailers should drive cautiously and watch for low-hanging branches. Sea-Tac International Airport is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about 75 miles to the northeast.
