Best time to visit Hawn State Park

April through early June and mid-September through early November are the best windows for RV travel to Hawn State Park. Spring brings wildflowers, flowing creeks, and mild temperatures, while fall offers crisp air and strong oak-hickory color without summer humidity. Summer is green and lush but hot, humid, and buggy, and the campground fills on weekends. Winter visits are quiet and hikeable on mild days, though freezing nights and reduced services make it a shoulder option best for self-contained rigs.

Things to do at Hawn State Park

  • Whispering Pine Trail Strenuous
    RV parking available

The Whispering Pine Trail is a roughly 10-mile backcountry loop through the Whispering Pines Wild Area, the park's signature long hike. It passes through shortleaf pine groves, rhyolite glades, and rugged hollows, and can be split into a north and south loop for shorter day hikes. Trailhead parking accommodates passenger vehicles and most tow vehicles.

  • Pickle Creek Trail Easy
    RV parking available

Pickle Creek Trail is a short, rocky, roughly one-mile interpretive loop along the clear waters of Pickle Creek, one of Missouri's highest-quality streams. Hikers cross sandstone boulders and small rapids with chances to see rare aquatic species and wildflowers. The trailhead shares parking with Whispering Pine, suitable for most tow vehicles and smaller RVs.

  • White Oaks Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The White Oaks Trail is a short connector loop near the campground that links to the longer Whispering Pine system through oak and pine woods. It offers a quick leg-stretcher for campers without the full backcountry commitment. Use the campground or main trailhead lot.

  • Pickle Creek wading and photography Easy
    RV parking available

Pickle Creek's pools and small cascades below the trailhead are a popular spot for wading, creek walking, and photography in warmer months. The clear water, pink rhyolite rock, and overhanging pines create distinctive Ozark scenes. Day-use parking and picnic tables are nearby.

  • Campground birding and stargazing Easy
    RV parking available

The park's wooded campground is a relaxing base for birding, with pine warblers, woodpeckers, and owls among the residents. Low ambient light and a rural setting also make it a solid spot for casual stargazing on clear nights. Paved roads within the loops are easy to navigate in an RV.

  • Picnicking at the day-use area Easy
    RV parking available

The day-use picnic area near Pickle Creek has tables, grills, and restrooms shaded by tall pines, making it a convenient lunch stop before or after hiking. Parking accommodates larger vehicles, though the biggest rigs should scout for pull-through space. It is a family-friendly option for travelers staying outside the park.

Beautiful RV, very spacious. Owners were very sweet and fast to respond to communication.

We rented this camper for a weekend trip. Ralph is very nice & responded quickly to our questions. He was very accommodating to our pick up & drop off times. The camper was just like the pictures except the outside was faded a little which did not matter to us. It was clean and well taken care of. It was well stocked with cooking/eating needs. It even had a coffee maker, toaster, condiments, outdoor chairs, & much more. The bed was very comfy. I would rent it again.

How to get to Hawn State Park

Hawn State Park sits off Route 144, about 10 miles southwest of Ste. Genevieve and roughly 65 miles (about 90 minutes) south of St. Louis via I-55 and Highway 32. From Cape Girardeau the drive is about 75 miles north, around 90 minutes. The final approach uses narrow, winding two-lane county roads with some steep grades and tight turns, so longer motorhomes and travel trailers should take the route slowly and avoid shortcuts on unpaved roads. St. Louis Lambert International Airport is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips, about 90 minutes north.
