Best time to visit Herring Cove Provincial Park

Late June through early September is the prime window, when the campground and golf course are open, fog burns off more quickly, and ocean breezes keep temperatures comfortable. July and August are warmest and busiest, so reservations are recommended for holiday weekends. Early September offers cooler nights, fewer crowds, and good hiking conditions before the park closes for the season. Spring and late fall are not suitable for RV camping here, as services are shut down and island weather can be cold, wet, and foggy.

Things to do at Herring Cove Provincial Park

  • Herring Cove Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Herring Cove Beach is a mile-long crescent of sand and pebble shoreline within the park, reached by a short walk or drive from the campground. Low tide reveals tidal pools and smooth stones, while high tide brings rolling surf from the Bay of Fundy. Day-use parking near the beach can accommodate most RVs.

  • Herring Cove Golf Course Easy
    RV parking available

The park's nine-hole golf course is one of the few seaside municipal-style courses in the region and is open to the public during the summer season. Fairways run through mixed forest with ocean glimpses, and clubs and carts can typically be rented on-site. Parking near the clubhouse is suitable for towed vehicles.

  • Lake Glensevern Trail Easy
    RV parking available

Lake Glensevern is a small freshwater lake inside the park, reached by an easy wooded trail from the campground area. The route is popular for birdwatching, with warblers, waterfowl, and bald eagles commonly spotted. Benches along the shore make a pleasant turnaround point for families.

  • Roosevelt Campobello International Park Easy
    RV parking available

Roosevelt Campobello International Park is a short drive north of Herring Cove and preserves the summer home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Visitors can tour the Roosevelt Cottage, walk coastal carriage roads, and take in views of Friar's Head and Passamaquoddy Bay. The visitor centre has RV-friendly parking. nps.gov/roca/index.htm

  • East Quoddy (Head Harbour) Lighthouse Moderate
    RV parking available

East Quoddy Lighthouse stands at the northern tip of Campobello Island and is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Atlantic Canada. At low tide, visitors can walk across exposed ledges to the lighthouse island, but the crossing must be timed carefully with the tide chart. Whales and porpoises are often seen from the point.

  • Con Robinson's Point and Liberty Point Trails Moderate
    RV parking available

These coastal trails within Roosevelt Campobello International Park lead to dramatic Bay of Fundy viewpoints over sea stacks and cliffs. Footing is uneven in places and cliff edges are unfenced, so caution is required. Trailhead lots can fit smaller motorhomes and most trailers with tow vehicles detached.

  • Whale and Seabird Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The waters around Campobello Island are a productive feeding ground for finback, minke, and humpback whales during summer. Several licensed operators run tours from Head Harbour and nearby Deer Island, and shore-based sightings are possible from Herring Cove's bluffs. Binoculars are recommended.

How to get to Herring Cove Provincial Park

Campobello Island is reached by the FDR Memorial Bridge from Lubec, Maine, so most Canadian RVers drive south through Maine rather than around the Bay of Fundy. From Saint John, New Brunswick the trip is roughly 180 km and requires crossing the U.S. border twice, while from Bangor, Maine the drive is about 160 km on Route 1 and Route 189. RVers should watch for narrow shoulders, frost heaves on Route 189, and tight turns approaching the bridge, and should confirm passport and customs requirements before crossing. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Bangor International Airport (BGR), with Saint John (YSJ) as the closest Canadian option.
