Walking or biking across the High Bridge is the signature experience of the park, offering panoramic views of the Appomattox River valley from more than 100 feet above the floodplain. The span stretches roughly 2,400 feet and is reached via a short ride from the Farmville trailhead.
Cyclists can ride the full length of the linear park along the historic South Side Rail Line railbed. The surface is flat, crushed stone, suitable for hybrid and gravel bikes.
Equestrians are welcome on the trail and have access to several dedicated parking areas. There are multiple entry points along the route, many with parking lots, including several suitable for horse trailers.
The park interprets the Battle of High Bridge, fought in the final days of Lee's retreat to Appomattox. Interpretive signage along the trail highlights the strategic role of the Appomattox River crossing.
The rural trail corridor supports a variety of wildlife, and visitors regularly spot birds and mammals along the way. Species sometimes seen along the corridor include quail, wild turkey, coyote, and ravens.
The companion state park lies just a few miles from High Bridge and preserves the site of a pivotal battle in the final days of the Civil War. The park has a visitor center with exhibits and hosts programs ranging from battlefield tours to evening astronomy events.
The town of Farmville serves as the main gateway to the trail and offers restaurants, shops, and services convenient for RV travelers. It also sits near the midpoint of the trail, making it a natural base for day rides in either direction.

It was such a great experience renting this camper. The host was wonderful and very communicative. All our needs were met by the host. The camper was also great. Clean & comfortable. My favorite thing is that the camper comes fully stocked with linens, plates, and pots/pans.

High Bridge Trail State Park, VA, United States
The main trailhead in Farmville is roughly a one-hour drive (about 65 miles) west of Richmond via US-360, and about three hours southwest of Washington, D.C. Lynchburg is approximately 45 miles west, and Charlottesville sits about 70 miles north via US-15. The terrain is rolling Piedmont with no significant mountain passes or tunnels, making it RV-friendly, though drivers should watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses and narrow rural roads when approaching secondary trailheads. Richmond International Airport (RIC) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
