Best time to visit High Falls State Park

Spring, from March through May, is widely considered the best window to visit, with mild temperatures, lush greenery, and stronger waterfall flow after winter rains. Fall, from late September through early November, brings comfortable days, thinner crowds, and turning hardwoods. Summer is warm, humid, and busy with lake users, so midweek stays are easier on RV travelers. Winter is quiet and mild by Southern standards, though waterfall flow varies with recent rainfall.

Things to do at High Falls State Park

  • High Falls Waterfall Viewing Easy
    RV parking available

The park's signature attraction is a broad cascade on the Towaliga River, considered one of the largest waterfalls south of Atlanta. Overlooks near the dam and along the Falls Trail give easy views within a short walk of main parking areas.

  • Non-Game Trail Easy
    RV parking available

This loop trail winds through hardwood forest and passes historic 19th-century mill ruins from the former town of High Falls. The mostly level path is a good leg-stretcher for RV campers between driving days.

  • Historic Ruins Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

This route follows the river past remnants of the old grist mill, hydroelectric plant, and dam infrastructure. Interpretive signs explain the area's industrial heritage before the town declined.

  • Fishing on High Falls Lake
    RV parking available

The 650-acre reservoir above the dam is stocked with largemouth bass, bream, crappie, and catfish. A boat ramp and fishing docks give shoreline and on-water access, and a valid Georgia fishing license is required.

  • Paddling the Towaliga River and Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards can be launched from park ramps on the lake above the falls. Rentals are typically available seasonally at the park's boathouse.

  • Disc Golf Course Easy
    RV parking available

High Falls features a wooded disc golf course suited to beginners and experienced players. The course is a short walk from the main day-use parking area.

  • Picnicking and Swimming Pool Easy
    RV parking available

Shaded picnic areas and a seasonal swimming pool are located near the day-use zone. The pool typically operates from late spring through early fall and is a popular break from the Georgia heat.

We had a fantastic experience renting this RV from Rob. His communication was excellent from start to finish. It was clear, prompt, and reassuring throughout the entire process. He took the time to thoroughly explain how to use the RV, which made us feel confident and comfortable before hitting the road. What truly stood out was Rob’s genuine understanding and commitment to our comfort. He was incredibly flexible, accommodating, and went above and beyond to make sure everything met our needs. You can tell he truly cares about the experience of the people renting from him. Thank you, Rob, for such a smooth and enjoyable experience. Wonderful time me and my family had camping while at an event. Kristopher did all the hard work and had the camper ready for us when we arrived. He went over everything very well about the camper and generator. Camper was fully stocked as well which is as nice. Thanks again Kristopher!

How to get to High Falls State Park

High Falls State Park is located just off Interstate 75 at Exit 198, roughly 50 miles south of Atlanta and about 30 miles north of Macon, making access straightforward for most RVs. From Atlanta, the drive takes about one hour via I-75 South, while Macon is approximately 35 to 45 minutes north on I-75. The park roads are paved and free of major grades or low tunnels, but the entrance road narrows near the campground loops so slow navigation is advised for larger rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, approximately 70 miles north.
