Best time to visit Highland Recreation Area

Late May through early October is the prime window for RV travel, with warm days, swimmable lakes, and all trails open. July and August bring the busiest weekends, so midweek arrivals are easier on the campground and boat launches. September and early October offer cooler nights, lighter traffic, and strong fall color in the Haven Hill hardwoods. Winter access is limited to day use, with trails turning over to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow allows.

Things to do at Highland Recreation Area

  • Haven Hill Natural Area Easy

Haven Hill is a National Natural Landmark within the park that protects one of the last large stands of undisturbed climax hardwood forest in southern Michigan. Trails loop through the former Edsel Ford estate around Haven Hill Lake, with interpretive signs on the historic landscape. Parking lots near the trailhead accommodate standard passenger vehicles better than large rigs, so towed vehicles are recommended.

  • Highland Mountain Bike Trails Moderate
    RV parking available

Highland is home to a well-regarded singletrack mountain bike system designed for intermediate to advanced riders. Loops feature rocky technical sections, climbs, and fast flowing descents through hardwood forest. The main trailhead has a dedicated gravel parking area suitable for tow vehicles and smaller RVs.

  • Equestrian Trail System Moderate
    RV parking available

Highland contains an extensive multi-use trail network heavily used by horseback riders, with a dedicated equestrian staging area and campground. Loops wind through rolling terrain, meadows, and wetlands. The staging area is designed for trucks and trailers and is the best bet for larger rigs.

  • Teeple Lake Beach and Boat Launch Easy
    RV parking available

Teeple Lake offers a sandy swimming beach, picnic area, and a boat launch with a parking lot sized for vehicles with trailers. The lake allows small motorized and non-motorized boats, with kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards popular in summer. Restrooms and picnic shelters round out the day-use area.

  • Alderman Lake Fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Alderman Lake and the other smaller inland lakes in the park support warmwater fishing, with bluegill, bass, and pike among the most common catches. Shoreline access and small-craft launches are spread around the park. A Michigan fishing license is required for anglers 17 and older.

  • Hiking and Cross-Country Ski Trails Moderate
    RV parking available

Beyond the mountain bike and equestrian networks, Highland has miles of quieter hiking-only and multi-use trails through rolling moraine terrain. In winter the same corridors convert to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow cover is sufficient. Trailhead parking along M-59 and near Haven Hill accommodates day-use vehicles.
