The Florida CCC Museum at Highlands Hammock tells the story of the Civilian Conservation Corps and its role in building Florida's state parks. Exhibits highlight the CCC camp that developed the park's roads, trails, and structures in the 1930s. The museum sits near the main day-use area with ample parking for RVs.
A paved one-way loop drive winds through the old-growth hammock, connecting trailheads, the campground, and picnic areas. The route is narrow with overhead tree canopy, so drivers of larger rigs should proceed slowly. Pull-offs allow stops for wildlife viewing.
A ranger-led tram tour takes visitors into backcountry portions of the park that are not accessible by car, including cypress swamp and wildlife habitat. Tours depart from the main concession area where RV parking is available. Check current schedule at the ranger station on arrival.
The Cypress Swamp Trail is a short boardwalk loop that crosses Little Charley Bowlegs Creek through a shaded cypress swamp. Alligators, turtles, and wading birds are commonly seen from the elevated walkway. The trailhead has a small lot suitable for most RVs and tow vehicles.
The Big Oak Trail is a short footpath through ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss and resurrection fern. It offers some of the park's most iconic hammock scenery in a compact, family-friendly loop. Trailhead parking is located along the park loop drive.
The park's paved loop road doubles as a cycling route through shaded hardwood hammock, flat and well-suited to casual riders. Bikes can be unloaded directly from RVs at the campground or day-use lots. Watch for wildlife and slow-moving vehicles on the one-way loop.
Highlands Hammock is a premier wildlife-viewing destination in central Florida, with alligators, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a long list of resident and migratory birds. Early mornings along the boardwalks and fire roads offer the best sightings. Binoculars and insect repellent are recommended year-round.
The Ancient Hammock Trail winds through a stand of centuries-old hardwoods, including towering oaks and sabal palms. The flat, shaded path is short enough for a quick stop between drives on the loop road. Interpretive signs highlight the ecology of Florida's rare old-growth hammock.

Highlands Hammock State Park, FL, United States
The park sits on County Road 634 (Hammock Road), about 6 miles west of Sebring and roughly 85 miles southeast of Tampa (around 1.5 hours) and 90 miles south of Orlando (about 1.75 hours). From Tampa take I-4 east to US-27 south, and from Orlando follow US-27 south through Haines City and Lake Wales; both routes are flat, straightforward RV drives with no tunnels or mountain passes. Rural two-lane approaches to the park have low clearance tree canopy in spots, so high-profile RVs should drive slowly on the park's internal loop drive. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Orlando International (MCO), with Tampa International (TPA) a similar drive.
